How can I qualify for an ESA letter?

In order to obtain an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) a prescription letter is required from a licensed mental health professional stating that the animal alleviates the stress caused by a mental or emotional disability.Medical doctors may also prescribe an ESA, check with your regular physician. In addition, under the FHA, ESA letters now trump an eviction notice if a person is being evicted from a rental residence that receives government subsidies for low income individuals. A landlord that receives government funding to make up the "reasonable" rental on a property will lose that subsidy if they try to evict a person or persons with an ESA pet; usually just takes a letter from a lawyer to make that clear to the landlord.

    Hi Harlan,

Thanks for helping me out. Me and my friend also did some research and found out 2-3 medical clinics. I am going to apply for ESA and hopefully get one soon. Steady Care Medical is the clinic I shortlisted. I have no idea what will happen but I am going to give it a try.

Check out this thread, the comments really take off, and you can tell some folks have a strong dislike for the whole ESA concept:
    https://www.reddit.com/r/Pets/comments/1kggprb/are_esa_letter_websites_trustworthy_how_to_get_a/

Quick breakdown: to get an Emotional Support Animal (ESA), you need a letter from a licensed mental health professional stating the animal helps manage symptoms of a mental or emotional condition. In some cases, your regular doctor might be able to help too.

Under the Fair Housing Act, a valid ESA letter can even protect against eviction in subsidized housing. Landlords who receive government funding could risk losing it if they deny someone with a legitimate ESA , often a lawyer's note is enough to clear up the misunderstanding.

Sad to see how much pushback there still is, especially when these animals genuinely help people.

This is not aimed at anyone.  This is a general response to help people understand the differences between ESA's, Service animals, and pets.

Wasn't there a Maddie's Fund Community Call about ESA's? I think it was.  During the call, it was stated that any one of an individual's doctors who knows the individual and their history could write a letter for an ESA.  Someone correct me if I am wrong about this.   The problem people may have with this is that some medical professionals do not want to put their name on a letter for an ESA.  Basically, the medical professional is putting their license on the line for the individual and the ESA.  Some states are harder to obtain this letter.

The "push back" everyone is seeing surrounding ESA's is that it's being abused.  ESA's do not require task training. Service Animals Do Require Task Training.  Here is a thought. If you are walking through a store with your task trained service dog and a pet dog comes running up to meet and sniff your service dog, how would that make you feel?  The service dog is working for the individual.  Pet dogs, (ESA's) are not task trained. The fact that the dog was allowed to run up to another dog or person can add unnecessary stress for the individual with the service dog.  I am all for people having an ESA.  Especially when it comes to keeping people and pets together.  That is why there are Service animals and Emotional Support Animals.  I have 2 pet dogs who are registered Therapy Canines.  I am a Therapy Team with each one of my dogs.  I only take my dogs to pet friendly stores to keep up their continued training.  While on therapy visits, there may be individuals who do not like dogs or they are afraid of dogs.  We respect that and keep walking.  We always wal with an employee during visits.  Side note: Therapy Animals are not required to have any training.

@amanda bandings It truly is difficult to understand why there is so much push back against ESAs.  However, there does seem to be a strong need for education for landlords, business owners, pet owners and people without pets.

Most landlords are concerned about the property damage.  I understand why.  There are too many people that do not house train or have dogs with separation anxiety that are allowed to rip houses apart.

My daughter has a miniature horse service animal.  Yes, a real service animal.  It took a lot of education for various members of the city to accept that miniature horses are qualified.  There was a lot of hate speech directed at my disabled daughter about it, but she stood firm after losing two service dogs (one from old age; one from poisoning).

We all need to keep educating the public on animal care, training and the differences between pets, ESAs and service animals.

I am a long time rescuer/TNR advocate and also a Social Worker. I'm happy to do letters free of change for whoever needs them. I did want to say this=there is alot of hatred toward those who request or have an ESA. There is alot of misunderstanding of what they are. And also there may be people who misuse  the term but there is also a whole bunch of people who are just radically angry and don't believe in ESAs. I get angry with these people because they think people are trying to use ESA's like service animals. I explain that I am not evaluating the animal, but the letter is for the need of the person. For some, their ESA is their only lifeline.  There should be no barriers to a person who needs having an ESA.

@Debra Hoffmann  thank you for offering such a wonderful service!  There was a time that I desperately wanted an ESA letter, but didn't know who to turn to.  I am a home owner now, so don't need one.  Hurray!!! If I meet someone in a similar circumstance, I'll be sure to send them your way!

    @Debra Hoffman,

We had a situation last year that your offer to write a Letter for an ESA would have helped a child on the Autistic spectrum.  None of the child's doctors would write a letter for the child. The Foundation was donating the dog to the child. I sent request to the parent so that they could give the request to the child's doctors. It came down to the dog being a pit mix and none of the doctors wanted to write the letter once they found out the breed. The child and the dog met in person.  Both the child and the dog cried when the child left the adoption event. They were living in public housing with weight restrictions. Also with a pet deposit.  If one of the doctors would have wrote a letter for the need of an ESA, the dog would be helping this child. While we had numerous applications on the dog, we held off to wait for a response from doctors.  I don't know how other people feel about pit mixes but, this dog will be a registered Therapy Dog in a hospital and a college campus now.   We would appreciate your offer of writing letters for an ESA. We are in MS.

The ESA letter is a legal document that is provided by the mental health professional that allows keeping the emotional support animal at home and can be taken while traveling in planes.

There are two methods to get the valid ESA letter that are:

Ask Your Doctor for ESA Letter

Ask your own doctor or therapist for the valid ESA letter. If they are offering the ESA letter service than you must discuss your mental health conditions to your doctor. When your doctor will approve the mental health then they will provide you with their official ESA Letter making your pet an official ESA.

    Get Your ESA Letter Online

There are many options to get your ESA Letter online. Nowadays there are many valid and legitimate websites that are providing online ESA letter facilities to you. You can get the ESA letter within 24 hours.
People who are suffering from depression, anxiety or other mental illnesses, the ESA are very beneficial for them they can use them as their emotional companion. They only need simple training as an ordinary pet requires. You can get the ESA letter online at https://www.pdscenter.com. Visit the website for more details.

I have to disagree with this: Get Your ESA Letter Online

I am a dog trainer who also helps owners task train dogs for service dog work.  I have seen so many "Service Dogs" in public that are not trained at all but, have the leash, vest, and identification stating the dog is a service dog while it is sitting in the shopping cart barking at everyone who walks by it. I have also seen Emotional Support Animals in non-pet friendly stores doing the same thing.  We have a problem in my area with fake service dogs and emotional support animals and the rights that each one has.  Some business only see a "Guide Dog" as a service animal.  The last time I looked at ada.gov, these websites are not supported by the department of Justice.  I have been through service dog training courses, dog training courses, and continue my education through out the year for the last 5 years. Owners have the right to train their own service dogs with or without the help of a dog trainer. I consider myself as a Coach for those owners to task train the service dog for a task they can not train the dog for.  If I am wrong on this, please educate me. I live in the grand state of Mississippi. It is not pet friendly but advertises that it is. I have a case right now with a child who has a need for an ESA. We were donating the dog (waiving adoption fees) based on the Doctor writing the letter for the ESA. The doctor said yes originally then decided not to write the letter. Same scenario as mentioned in the video. The school counselor recommends the child have an ESA but can not write the letter. The housing unit does accept pets under 25 lbs with breed restrictions. The dog in question does not meet the requirements. This has been going on for almost a month.

The 'ESA' is not certifying the animal, but the  person who has the animal. I have had people who have ESA's that are fish that swim in a pond or an aquarium.  One man had a pet mouse 'Harlan' who he loved deeply and that gave him reason and meaning in his life. I hve a veteran in my community who's ESA is also a service dog-he goes to the store with him and walks with him everything to help with severe PTSD. But the ESA is not 'evaluated' by a 'trainer' etc.  They are providing emotional support in circumstances where the person has trouble coping. Where I used to work we had an ESA dog, Charlie who helped us as staff when we were feeling shut down. He was very needed. I don't like there to be more barriers for people accessing help, but less. Are there people who somehow 'take advantage', yes, but I think it's the exception, rather than the rule.

Emotional Support Animals do not have public access rights. They only have rights to public housing. Air Carrier Act is separate.  ESA's must only be house trained. If it's a dog or cat.

Therapy Animals do not have public access rights. They must be invited to places for visits or therapy animals can come to work with their handler once permission is given by the employer.  You will see Therapy animals used in a variety of settings. Medical professionals and schools may have them in their office or in a classroom.  This is Animal Assisted Intervention or Therapy. Therapy Animals are evaluated with their handlers by Therapy Animal Organizations.  I am a licensed Team Evaluator for a Registering Therapy Animal organization.

Service Dogs have the same rights as the individuals they are "working" for, their handler with a disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act.   Only non-profit service dog training organizations or graduates of a Service Dog Training school can give the PAT (public access test) for service dogs. Owners have the right to train their own service dog with or without the help of a trainer. Laws have changed.  A service dog can have one task trained to be a service dog. It was 120 hours of documented task training  hours.  You can find this information on this website: www.ada.gov Title 2 and 3 for service animals.  Then it goes by state and local laws.

Most of the time a therapy dog has failed out of service dog training for one reason or another. Most of the time it's because the dog is too  friendly with people or other animals. Some times the dog ends up not having what is needed to work for its handler.

There is a blurry line between what people think are Emotional Support and Therapy Animals.

Emotional Support Animals are just that-they support the person in times of emotional crisis, or to keep  the person from having a meltdown. I have an 'unoffical' ESA, Mr. Fluffy, who knows when I'm going to have an anxiety/panic attack and will come and sit on me and purr. He can 'read' me.

When I was working as an Intensive Case Manager, I saw the need for people to have their animals-and sadly, the uncaring of many landlords that were trying to get rid of long time tenants by making their animals the issue.  Many of my clients who had animals-and I don't use the word 'pets'; because our animals are far more than that...they are our lifeline often in a world that may feel confusing, overwhelming, and make us feel isolated.

I'd like to see more advocating for them, as opposed to the negativity and insanity that some people feel with the 'they take them into  (insert name here) and they aren't supposed to do that!'

I don't take Fluffy out with me, but he's better behaved than lots of little kids that have meltdowns in stores, and lets not forget that ESA's prevent meltdowns, feelings of panic, and even sometimes seizures (my friend has an ESA cat who also alerts to seizures-she was not trained to do this-she just does.

I'd like to seem more inclusion, and us advocating, not exclusivity which only makes things harder on people.

    Mr. Fluffy showing his charm.

    Hello.
As you probably already know, ESA letter gives you some privileges.
In particular, your pet may be in your hands during the flight, and this document also allows you to solve problems with accommodation in case of rental housing.
There are many ways to get Emoniotnal support Animal letter.
The best is to visit your healthcare professional psychologist.
But people do not always have time to go to the doctor. You can use online services. There are already a lot of them.
Here are some of them: https://mycurepet.com/how-to-get-esa-letter/ , https://esdoctors.com/how-to-get-emotional-support-animal-letters/.
Online services allow you to quickly get a recommendation, but this way is more expensive. The choice is yours. There are no problems with this.
    Best regards, Vladislav.

To qualify for an ESA you need a letter from a licensed medical health professional.

The letter should include the license type and number of number of the LMHP,  the state in which they're licensed to practice, the date their license was issued,  printed on their official letterhead with their contact information and the date the letter was issued.

It should include information about you, namely that you have a mental or emotional health condition that limits one or more major life activities that would be aided by the presence of an emotional support animal.

    Hope this helps!

I am a licensed Master Social Worker. I see clients and do telehealth. I am always willing to write an ESA letter as a therapist, because I believe that animals have immense benefits for their people. This does require a telehealth session, at least one, for us to discuss background, etc, and a general consent that you've allowed me to do so.

Years ago, we started a program in NY, that sadly we didn't pursue when we moved called 'Be The Change'. This started from my unoffical experiences years before I become a Social Worker but was cemented when I became an Intensive Case Manager, saw how cients benefited from having animals in their lives, and how greedy building owners/landlords/managers harassed and intimidated people who needed and wanted animals in their lives.

I don't think this should be made difficult for people, but sadly, it is. Many a time when I felt myself overwhelmed and alone just to have one of my cats come and purr in my ear-it made all the difference.

To qualify for an ESA (Emotional Support Animal) letter, you need a licensed mental health professional to diagnose you with a mental or emotional condition (like anxiety or depression) and determine that an ESA would help alleviate symptoms.

    Hi Andrea,

I recently went through the process of getting my ESA letter, so I thought I'd share how it works.

To qualify, you need to consult with a licensed mental health professional (LMHP) who can assess whether you have a mental or emotional condition like anxiety, depression, PTSD, or similar. If they believe an emotional support animal would help, they can issue an official ESA letter.

Make sure the letter is legitimate-it should be on the therapist's letterhead, include their license details, and clearly state your need for an ESA. Also, be cautious of websites that promise instant letters without any real evaluation. Those are often scams.

One of the best and most trusted options I found is RealESALetter.com. It's one of the highest-rated ESA websites on Google, and the process was smooth, secure, and handled by real professionals.

    Hope that helps!
