Hi Joe-I have been successfully writing grants for my org for the last 10 years (I am not a grant writer by profession.) I would suggest you start simply-do a search for "animal welfare grants" or something similarly generic and simple. From there it's a matter of spending the time to research any that you find, as most grants are quite specific as to the types of orgs and projects they will fund. Claudia's suggestion about local community grants is a good one, also. I would avoid spending time on the "big" name grants like Rachael Ray, Petsmart, etc...your chances of receiving funding won't be high and those grants are quite a bit of work and reporting. Be sure you have all your ducks in a row before you start writing-have a clear and specific mission, a budget, organizational info and a VERY clear idea of the reason for your grant request...be able to support your request reasoning with facts. Good luck!
