  • 1.  October + November 2025 Giveaway: Share your end-of-year fundraising strategies!

    Posted 10-01-2025 10:40 AM

As the year winds down, animal well-being organizations are gearing up for one of the most important fundraising seasons. From Giving Tuesday to holiday campaigns, this is a prime time to meet urgent needs, plan for the year ahead and engage your community in meaningful ways.

While fundraising ultimately aims to support your mission and the pets in your care, many organizations also use this season to strengthen relationships with donors, volunteers and community partners. Coordinated campaigns like highlighting stories of impact, celebrating successes, and showing gratitude for supporters can make your fundraising campaigns even more purposeful.

We'd love to hear from you: How does your organization approach end-of-year fundraising?

Sharing your experiences can inspire others, and sometimes the simplest strategies like leveraging storytelling on social media, matching gift challenges, online auctions, or engaging your volunteers and fosters can have the biggest impact especially during the giving/holiday season.

💬 How to enter to win this October & November! Participating in this thread during October & November 2025 will automatically enter you into our 30th anniversary giveaway, where one winner will receive $1,000 in unrestricted funds to help kickstart your fundraising efforts.

Our organization approaches fundraising in a few ways, although my involvement is mostly focused on social media posts. As the year comes to the end, my plan is to fundraise for specific foster cases with particular financial needs - for example, we have two medical procedures coming up that need funding. I find that sometimes people prefer to know exactly what their money is going towards. Our org also designed T shirts and we are selling those for the first time as the year comes to an end!

    Hello Farrah,

I've found that videos are popular posts on social media. Also, keeping posts short and not too detailed has more of an impact. You can always add a link to your website with "more info" or "the full story".

Hi Megan - I'm a volunteer with Just Giants Rescue, Inc. out of Oswego, Il.  We have found  targeted donation requests do much better than general requests for donations.  There is so much fraud out there today and you are right, people what to know how their money is being used...exactly who it is helping.  If we are low on enrichment products, we will post a wish list and our Amazon link on our social media pages.  Those do really well also.  I recently fostered a pregnant Great Dane.  I have never had a dog that had puppies so I needed lots of supplies for her.  Our followers bought everthing off her Amazon wish list...even a $90 whelping pen.   Good luck in your fundraising efforts.

With the social media campaigns, do you usually do any "lead in" posts about upcoming fundraisers or anything or do you go straight for the post with "the ask"? I've been trying to figure out the best approach for this myself so I'd love to hear what's worked for you.

This will be our first holiday season where we have enough volunteers to really brainstorm ideas for fundraising. We are planning to do more of a Thanksgiving or New Years post card to donors, foster/volunteers, and adopters. There are a few pop-up events we will be partnering with local groups, and we have started doing short pop-ups at a local mental health facility to increase our network.  We are also planning a fundraising/thank you event at a local cidery where one of our fosters collaborated with them by providing honey for a cyser (honey cider). A portion of the proceeds will go to the rescue. Plus, the foster donated sanitized Gerber baby food jars (used to wean neonates) of honey to give away if people donated a minimum $ amount TBD.

Hi Brandi - I'm a volunteer with Just Giants Rescue, Inc.  While JGRI has been in existence for 11 years, there's been a major changeover in volunteers.  I was recently appointed Donations Coordinator and I am looking for creative fundraising ideas as well.  I know Culvers does a donation night so I was thinking about asking if we could do one four our rescue.  Bring a few dogs, have them outside close to the drive-up line, and hand out a flyer with a blurb on what we do and ask them to mention our rescue or even to follow our social media pages.  It's up to our board if we do it, but it's an idea, right?

    HI!

Donation nights are great IF you get a lot of people in to say they are there for your rescue. We had one that was pretty good with Panera; we did another movie night and it was a complete DUD. Whatever you do be sure to look at the rules....like our Panera one said you cannot solicit on site or pass out flyers on site, and we are a small new rescue so getting people to come in specifically for us was difficult.

We try to utilize the end of year as a time to educate about our programs and our needs. We have multiple donation barrels that we place around at businesses and public places to collect donations for the pets of the unhoused. As a municipality people are hesitant to give cash donations but they feel great about providing food or beds or collars or toys.

We're a newly established foster-based 501(c)(3) called Dogs 4 U, serving Northwest Indiana and the surrounding suburbs. As a brand-new rescue, we're ending our first year with hope, gratitude, and a big goal to grow our impact in 2026.

This holiday season, we'll be at several local holiday shows with Dogs 4 U swag for donations, helping fund vet care, food, and supplies for our foster pups. We'll also be recruiting new fosters, welcoming volunteers, and reaching out to a few corporate sponsors for small sponsorships to support our upcoming community events.

To make giving more personal, we're launching "Sponsor a Dog for the Holidays" and "The 12 Days of Rescue"-two heartfelt campaigns celebrating the amazing dogs, fosters, and supporters who remind us why we do what we do. Our goal is simple: end the year strong and keep transforming lives, one dog at a time.

It may not seem like much, but buying out of date merchandise such as collars, leashes, food & water bowls from the local dollar general is very cost effective & a great way to use as silent auction basket items, with the proceeds of the basket going to your shelter or cause. I also reach out to pet food companies for the freebies such as coupons, those are a great promoter as well!

Especially am appreciative of all the support for grant writing here - Our org has really been trying to dig into grant funding as we work to expand our operations. Fundraising via social media has been slow as our growth continues at a slow pace. I have seen similar orgs that started at the same time as ours blow up just due to one trending sound video getting 4 million views, but we haven't had that kind of luck yet. They shot up to 17k followers which expanded their fundraising ability. Has anyone successfully engaged adopters to be major contributors towards year end? I feel like this is an untapped potential for us!

Farrah - Don't give up.  We have a social media team that works endlessly scheduling posts on Facebook and Instagram.  They keep trying to come up with unique ideas to grab attention.  Apparently, black dogs get passed up the most at shelters/rescues.  Our team put together a black dog halloween post with a discounted adoption fee During the month of October for only those 5 dogs.  I personally don't know how well it did, but it was a creative approach.  Try stalking the socials of other rescues/shelters and see what's working for them.  Ask everyone you know (friends, family, neighbors, co-workers) to share your posts every couple days.  If you ask for help and people say they can't afford it...respond with sharing or social media posts is free (guilt sometimes works too).   You will get there...just keep trying.

Your words are encouraging. The rescue I volunteer with doesn't have a Social Media team and we  need one! We  always seem to miss the mark when it comes to posting for marketing purposes, too late and not often enough.  We have good intentions but yet it never quite happens.  Your team approach is what I plan on bringing back to the rescue again ( I have before) . Right know, it is one person  responsible and it is too much on that one person.  Thanks.

Here's an idea - reach out to your area high schools and see if there are any kids that need community service hours for school clubs.  If any of them are good with social media, maybe they would be willing to get things moving for you.  Or maybe reach out to your local community college and see if there's an IT student that would be willing to volunteer for your organization doing social media posts.  It would be an awesome resume builder.

I am really excited about our EOY fundraiser - and will post a photo when it's finished! It's actually an ongoing fundraiser, but we will launch it in conjunction with EOY: We are creating an actual Rainbow Bridge, which include names of pets that we have helped that have passed. But supporters can make a memorial donation to have their pet's name written on the Rainbow Bridge. I will probably be finished painting it today!

Our foundation gives grants for emergency veterinary bills and we will be doing "Sponsor a stocking" for an EOY/holiday fundraiser. Our program director is a scrub nurse at a local veterinary hospital, where I also used to work as an ICU nurse. There will be different tiers of sponsorships but it will include donating for toys, blankets and a voucher towards a pets hospital bill. Once we have put the stockings together, our program director will work with her surgeon and the medical director to give them out to families in need, in either the surgery or ICU department!

    @Sarah Fuqua

I love this idea! What a beautiful way to remember the pets who've passed while giving supporters a place to remember their own as well.

A few years ago, I visited a town in North Carolina that had a Rainbow Bridge in their downtown area. People could come and hang their dogs' collars there, and it became such a meaningful draw for the community.

This is such a wonderful way not only to honor the animals you've helped and your supporters loved but could also to bring more people to your rescue.

I'd love to see a photo if it's complete! 🤗

As the year winds down, this topic couldn't be more timely. Thank you for spotlighting it!

For many of us in animal welfare, the end-of-year season is absolutely pivotal. It's when urgent needs rise, donor generosity peaks, and relationships truly deepen. At Lionel's Legacy, we've found that pairing heartfelt storytelling with community-driven engagement creates incredible momentum heading into the holidays.

We embrace a mix of mission-based experiences and creative campaigns to connect with our supporters:

Community Events with Purpose https: (www.lionelslegacy.org/events/)
From Seniors & Sangria (Oct 10) and Howl-oween Mutt March (Oct 18) to North Park Vegan Pop-Up/Adoption Events, each gathering doubles as both a social experience and a storytelling opportunity. These events bring our mission to life and strengthen donor and volunteer connections in person.

    Mission-Driven Fundraisers
Our 2024 Senior Dog Calendar Campaign raised over $12,000, surpassing our goal by 120%! It's a perfect example of how tangible, meaningful keepsakes can drive donations while spreading our message all year long. We do calendar campaigns every other year.

    Programs that Inspire Giving
Our Keeping Pets HOME Fund helps seniors on fixed incomes keep their beloved pets by covering essential vet and dental care. Stories from this program are deeply emotional and perfect for end-of-year appeals, showing donors the direct, life-changing impact of their gifts.

    Our Year-End Fundraising Approach:

As we head into Giving Tuesday and the holiday season, we're leaning into a few key strategies inspired by what's worked best for us and our community:

Storytelling with Purpose – Sharing senior pet journeys and letting donors "choose a story" to support.

Matching Gift Challenges – Offering limited-time matching windows to double donor impact.
Event-Linked Giving – Turning in-person events into giving moments with QR codes and sponsor opportunities.
Keepsake Campaigns – Offering limited-edition items like calendars or ornaments as donor thank-yous. Last year a volunteer made the cutest Lionel's Legacy ornaments.
Volunteer & Foster Spotlights – Celebrating the humans behind the mission through social media features.
Gratitude First – Handwritten notes, thank-you videos, and "look what you made possible" updates to close the year.

End-of-year fundraising isn't just about dollars. Lionel's Legacy is very much about building community, celebrating impact, and inviting others to share in the love we have for the animals we serve.

I'm happy to share our campaign calendar! No need to be an expert, I got a bit of help from ChatGPT on this one, haha.

One of my biggest focuses this fall is to get both stories and gratitude from all staff and all volunteers, that we can share with donors/volunteers. This includes not only marketing & fundraising stories, but testimonies and more about their "why." For example, a volunteer writing a note for another volunteer who makes a gift. Or a video thanks to a donor who loves cats, from a cat caretaking staff member or a kitten foster. Lots of gratitude coming from people other than myself and the CEO this giving season!

    Hello Everyone,

Wonderful ideas for fundraising and community awareness. I just wanted to say, don't forget GIVING TUESDAY. This year it falls on December 2nd. We usually start with "Save the Date" outreach about a week before (emails, social media, etc.) and then follow up on the day of. Having a specific animal's story to focus on is a plus.

For the past five years we've created a calendar with images of some of the rescued animals at our sanctuary. We have it printed at a local printer who gives us a great deal. We do pretty well with selling them but we also use the calendar as a thank you gift to our larger and repeat donors. Last year we did a twelve days of Christmas campaign on our social media pages with cute images of the animals, but instead of asking for cash donations we asked for in-kind donations such as toys for the animals. We also concentrate on Giving Tuesday and share stories on how our supporters donations have helped specific animals.

Here is the flyer we use to have people pre-order our calendars.  We work with a local printer who charges us $5.50 per calendar, our board picks the images of each animal and we have a graphic designer who donates her time to put it all together.

Fundraising for us is super important since we intake so many animals. We will do a lot of fundraising for donations for funds for medical care cats since we take in a lot that need to visit our clinic. We also will do pleas for cat food and kitten food and supplies. Kitten season happens all year long, so we are always hoping for donations. We will try to do some events and promotions around the holidays and are selling tshirts to hopefully fund some animal care.

Our biggest success has come from soliciting matching gift donations from some of our biggest supporters.   They were willing to give even more for the opportunity to encourage others to give to us.  I still need to improve on story telling but that takes a lot of time.

Hi Deana - I'm the person that creates our pet profiles in Petstablished.  Our foster homes submit a pupdate every couple weeks and I enter the "how I'm doing" secion in their profile.  ChatGPT is a wonderful resource to help with story telling.  I just ask for the suitable pet adoption profile from the following paragraph and paste the information in and I get a wonderful profile to post.  Sometimes I have to tweak it, but  it's always better than anything I come up with.

How are we at the end of the year already?!?! We were hit hard by several medical cases this year so really taking this time to re-group.  We ran 3 fairly successful external fundraisers this fall (I say successful in that they did not cost us anything, so it was all profit!) and are getting ready to announce our holiday photo fundraiser for pets.  We had a donor come through big for us this past week, so are looking at some donor/sponsor opportunities to encourage others to donate to a specific pet or need, like others mentioned.  It definitely helps when supporters truly understand the impact of their dollars and see where that money is going.  I don't think many fully realize what it costs per animal in care, and that we don't come close to getting that back in adoptions fees.  Looking at local venues that already host trivia nights, bingo, etc to see if we can team up with them to split the proceeds or something like that.

Our mini campaign flows month by month without frills. October builds awareness and on-ramps: why bulldogs need specialized care, the launch of our care-kit drive, and recruiting a handful of peer fundraisers. November centers on three real journeys and GivingTuesday with a 24-hour push to fund six kits, plus one early match and in-person wishlist drop-offs. December is gratitude and keepsakes-our "12 Days of Wiggles," a second mid-month match, a warm December 28 recap, and a concise December 31 reminder. For us, EOY isn't just fundraising-it's community, momentum, and proof that small, concrete actions change outcomes fast.

We try to be strategic with our fundraising, and leverage relationships with community partners who can attest to the impact of our work together. As a nurse scientist at an academic institution, donors want to hear from our field-based teams more so than myself. I can help fill in the gaps and give the "big picture" - but the stories bring the work to life. To that end, social media, e-newsletters and other mixed media dissemination to our networks can be helpful, and we try to pair them with holidays and/or other events happening (e.g., "Spay and Neuter Awareness Month") to 1) highlight our work and 2) bring about awareness around certain topics as they are happening in the calendar year.

Looking forward to learning from others on this thread about strategies that work for y'all!

We're hosting a Whoville Holiday Party as a seasonal fundraiser, and it's shaping up to be both fun and financially smart.

The event will include a hot cocoa and pup cup station, and we've figured out an affordable way to make it special. The mugs are basic dollar-store mugs but we add a UV DTF sticker to each one - it's permanent, looks great, and keeps our total cost around $2.50 per mug. That's a great price point for something that feels personal and festive.

On top of the event itself, we always are thinking about ways to engage supporters who won't be able to attend - because that's where we can really grow our fundraising impact. For this one, we're introducing a "Decorate the Whoville Tree" idea.

Supporters can make a donation of any amount, and we'll create a simple ornament featuring a picture of their pup and a short inscription - just something sweet and personal. We'll print them and hang them on our Whoville tree during the event. It's easy, low-cost, and meaningful - and we've found this kind of participation piece often brings in steady donations from people who love being included even from afar.

It's a simple concept, but it connects hearts to the event - and that's where the magic (and fundraising) really happens. It's also great for the community.

Just Giants Rescue, Inc. had a large turnover in board members and volunteers over the last few years so we don't really have a fundraising program in place.  I was recently "promoted" to Donations Coordinator so I'm trying to change that.  There are some great ideas in this chat that I hope to implement for 2026.

As far as year end 2025, we have a couple things planned.  One of our board members decorates his home for Halloween.  When I say decorates...this man's home has been on local new channels because of how great it is.  Every year Just Giants has a donation event where people donate items our rescue needs and they get a special tour of the grounds.  For Christmas, the same board member has people to his house for pictures with Santa and the Grinch.

I'm excited about some of the things I've seen here and have thought of ways to put a spin on it for our organization.  Hope everyone does well with their end of year efforts.

So far we've only planned a Halloween costume contest where people can enter their animals for a small fee, and the winners will get a basket full of goodies. I might need to start bringing up ideas for future events since we usually just plan things based on which volunteers are willing to help.

At the ARL, we always plan our last mailed appeal of the year to coincide with our Giving Tuesday effort. We plan videos, posts, and emails to begin about 2 weeks prior to Giving Tuesday to plant the seed and try to separate ourselves from those larger organizations who just promote Giving Tuesday. We also offer an annual ornament for donors of a certain amount and have a limited number to give away. We have some donors who wait for the new ornament each year. We are also very fortunate to have matching donors for our Giving Tuesday campaign to help promote giving.

As the year winds down, we find it extremely important to review our LYBUNTS and create personal contacts with them to ask for their renewal - personal notes, calls, emails - however we can reach them. It's a busy time of the year, but persistence and personal touch makes all the difference.

This year has brought many changes to our organization so we haven't been able to give full focus to our EOY fundraising but a few things we do that tend to be easy to manage are:

Local Bar Donation Nights – A few awesome local bars host a night where a portion of sales goes to our rescue.

In-Kind Donation Signs In Stores – We've posted signs at our local Tractor Supply stores so shoppers know what items we're in need of, like food and toys.

Social Media Posts – Every post we share through the end of the year includes donation links and reminders that we need help with specific needs like our spay and neuter fund or vet bills.

The app TREAT - It's a free game where users can play and send our dogs real treats and food! It costs nothing to your rescue or the player.

Local Radio Ads - End-of-year giving ramps up around the holidays, and local radio stations are a great way to reach donors who may not be on social media.

Sign Up for Google Ads for Nonprofits - If you're a registered 501(c)(3), you can apply for Google Ad Grants, which gives you up to $10,000/month in free search ads. We focus our ads to land on donation pages.

Just read your post and wanted to alert you that the free Google ads are a challenge.  We were approved in 2024 and hired a consultant to help us to find our way through the complex rules.  She developed monthly "campaigns" for us that were very well done and beautiful but what happened was we got a ton of phone calls from all over the US wanting us to take cats or for people who wanted to volunteer, EVEN THOUGH all our messaging was clear that we were in the Memphis area.  Upon talking to other animal rescue organizations that had used Google Ads we discovered they really don't work very well for locally-focused non-profits.  We ended our consulting in December 2024.  OUR LACK OF SUCCESS WAS NOT THE FAULT of the consultant,  It was that Google Ads and our local cat rescue really didn't work.

The Google ad campaigns are quite complex but there are options to:

    • Only serve people in your community
    • Exclude keywords that don't match your goals (I am also cat only so I exclude dog, puppy, and surrender, along with several dozen others)
    • Use inclusive keywords that inherently match your goals ("memphis cat rescue" will NOT show if you type "cat rescue" or Tennessee cat rescue)

If you paid someone and they didn't utilize those features, they were not qualified to charge someone for running a Google Ads campaign, and I can pretty much tell from your results that they did not. I do not have either of the problems you mentioned.  I do agree the ads are overall very challenging and may not be worth it, especially if you are paying someone specifically to run the ads.

For end of year we do a LOT of email AND letter writing (and stamp licking). We also hold online fundraisers and we also set up a Booth at Tractor Supply. This year has been really hard and it looks like we won't be able to build the 2 stalls we need for 2 of the horses in our care, but the economy has been horrible so we understand. When donations are low, we are always self funded.

This year, we are doing an old traditional direct mail campaign. We haven't done that for a while and thought it would be worth a try again. We also found that completing the USPS nonprofit application makes it so we can use a local printer to print AND mail the letters for less than the cost of printing, folding, envelope stuffing, and stamping at regular USPS rates! It's a great time saver for us and our local printer is, of course, giving us a great discount on the mailing materials.  I attached a copy of the USPS form. For Line 9, animal welfare nonprofits are considered (04) Philanthropic.

The nonprofit pricing is only for bulk mail (over 200 pieces at a time). You also have to use it at least once every 2 years or USPS will revoke the application. Current pricing is 21.2 cents versus 56 cents for a post card and 78 cents for a letter.

Hi all - we're VARS (Volunteer Animal Retrieval Specialists), a 501(c)(3) that safely retrieves animals-especially cats-from trees, rooftops, and other tough spots. Our volunteers are trained in low-stress handling and rope-access safety. We partner with guardians, shelters, and first responders to bring animals down safely, quickly, and humanely, then reunite them with families or coordinate with shelters when needed.

How we fund this work: We're a small volunteer team based in Modesto, CA and often out on the ground across our area (and beyond), sharing info and handling real cases. Most support comes from thankful guardians after we retrieve a loved one. As a newly formed nonprofit, we're growing visibility so we can say "yes" to more calls without pulling resources from first responders.

New! We just launched our website where you can request help and read rescue stories: varsca.com

We'd love to share field photos, answer questions, and connect with anyone who might need help-or wants to help our organization. Thanks for welcoming us; we're excited to be part of this community!

Our organization really ramps up on storytelling during our end of year campaigns. Right now we are focusing on a specific animal's story in our direct mail appeal, so to support that ask, I will make social posts and emails that will reach different audiences to maximize impact. For Giving Tuesday, we typically pick a central theme (like pets who had "second chances" or pets with specific medical needs) and deploy social posts and email blasts starting the Tuesday before GT and every day leading up to it. It helps to centralize our message and make sure we aren't putting too many asks out which might lead to fatigue with our donors.

Great ideas here!  We have found that reaching out to friends and other organizations to collaborate is a great way to reach more people.  For example, we've partnered with a friend who is a professional photographer (and fellow dog lover) to volunteer his time and talent for a mini photo shoot with your pup fundraiser.  We're marketing it as a way to prep for holiday cards or a holiday gift to a dog loving friend.

Our organization approaches fundraising primarily based on specific needs. For example, we were treating three heartworm cases and needed to raise funds for that.

Having a place where donors can see the amount of funds raised helps gain traction. The donation tool on Facebook has been very beneficial for us.

However, we are working on getting auction items for our end-of-the-year silent auction, which helps raise funds for the upcoming year.

Our goal is to explore additional fundraising ideas to gain traction and increase our monthly donation rates. Some organizations do a significant dinner event, which we are considering in the spring.

We've used Giving Grid for Giving Tuesday in the past, and overall it's been a great tool for building excitement and visual engagement. The setup process is quick and easy, and the grid layout makes it fun for donors to see the progress fill in throughout the day. It's also very shareable on social media, which helps keep the momentum going and encourages participation from supporters at all giving levels.

That said, one drawback we've noticed is the $15 fee per donation, which can take away a noticeable portion from what actually goes to the animals - especially for smaller gifts. The grid format, while engaging, can also feel a bit limiting if we want to customize the campaign to fit our own branding or storytelling style.

Because of that, we're exploring new approaches this year - possibly encouraging direct donations through our website to avoid fees and maximize impact. Would love to hear if others have found platforms that balance the same level of engagement as Giving Grid but with lower fees or more flexibility.

We also changed our name because we moved to a neighbor city. Our EOY fundraiser is making a video including our main donors and businesses to explain why donate to use and use it as an appeal for EOY but also to be used through 2026 to reach new audiences. We are still learning to fundraise effectively, so I really appreciate all of the ideas I have read here.

I am doing a running challenge to raise money for the sanctuary, so we will be promoting that as best we can. We will talk about our medical expenses, hay for the winter, every day expenses, and expansing our pasture.

We are a brand new rescue and are busy learning and absorbing as much information as possible! This, our first "year-end" season, we are engaging our social media followers with stories and reels, initiating a giving campaign, and really trying to leverage our social media presence.

I am really enjoying all these ideas in the posts, because we are just now a year old and foster based. Some ideas I have used with other rescues have turned out to be duds for us. I am going to send out specially tailored thank you cards to  our fosters for Thanskgiving...and cannot decide if I should put in a little bump in there to ask them to ask friends to donate. Any thoughts? I really want to just focus on the "thank you" part so I might just try, "thanks for sharing all our great successes with your friends".....

We will probably do photos with Santa; that seems to be a really great fundraiser no matter where you are. We are "competing" so to speak with quite a few rescues in our area that are well established, and that is where people seem to want to give their money. But  there is usually an audience for Santa photos.

One interesting thing that has happened...someone donated some Halloween dog toys to us, so we put those out at an adoption event recently. And when people asked how much they were, we said they are donation, whatever you feel you would like to donate. And everyone that donated for a toy put in far more than we would have asked for.

Our organization tries to secure a large matching gift for EOY fundraising as it has proven to really inspire others to give, knowing their gift will be matched, dollar-for-dollar. Initially, we send out our EOY appeal to our mailing list and about a few weeks later we will make a special announcement about the match. Donors who already made a gift have turned around and made an additional gift because of this special opportunity.

When appealing to the public, outside of our donor database, we promote heavily on social media channels using eye catching graphics and videos that include shelter animals.  Our shelter does not spend any money on paid advertising, the return for us has never justified the cost. Instead, we submit press releases at calculated times, identify trending hashtags,  target community groups that share our mission and ask to share our posts, and utilize reels on Facebook. Reels have expanded our reach a great deal in the past 4 months alone!

Most importantly, we think about our messaging. When so many other organizations are asking for donations at the end of the year, remember to gear your message to the donor. By inviting your donors to be apart of something impactful, THEY have the power to change lives.

I hope this helps someone. Best of luck in your year-end fundraising!

That's such a thoughtful giveaway idea! Toward the end of each year, our team focuses on community-driven campaigns that connect emotion with purpose. Last winter, we paired our donor appreciation event with a charity transportation service for guests coming from the airport  a smooth arrangement managed through this service. It made the evening feel more personal and organized while keeping donors engaged in a meaningful way. How do you usually keep your supporters involved beyond the donation itself?

Furr-ific Bingo! is a fun way to raise funds to support our local animal shelter and the work we do in Pet Pals. We are volunteers, who promote the spaying
and neutering of dogs and cats for the City of  Mexico Animal Shelter, and those in foster to adopt rescue homes through the Audrain Humane Society.  We supply food, carriers and often cover the cost of dental care and surgery for animals rescued from dire circumstances.  We provide local animals the love and care they deserve. We moved to a new facility and not a lot of people know we are here. This fall, we are hosting small fundraiser events to help bring in end of year funds. This gives our team an opportunity to reconnect with our community so we can ask for the larger donations/sponsorships in the future after they have learned what we are doing and how we plan to keep growing, but need their help to save more lives. At our onsite adoption events, we had volunteers serving hot dogs and lemonade for donations, along with a dunking booth. 3 balls for $10 and put key community members in the dunking booth to draw in new crowds. We will be hosting a loteria in November with tickets for two cards per ticket. We have warmer weather here year around and plan to have a small Christmas festival.

Direct Donations are always the most effective for us being in a smaller town. I promote their businesses in social media posts, as well in the area newspapers. Free advertisement is always a great bartering subject when asking for any size of a donation.
I have had a lot of luck with emailing companies directly with the same message, even if it's bags of dog or cat food. treats, collars and leashes, anything is appreciated tremendously!
I am in the process of trying to put together a variety of baskets for people to bid on with a silent auction, I am just waiting for finality and approval at this point.

I haven't given much thought to fundraising yet for the holiday season coming up.  I've been battling a serious medical catastrophe. Back in June, I was mauled by an emergency foster dog that we had had for three weeks.  He had been abused but no one knew to what extent. He turned on me and tried to kill me.  He mauled both of my arms and hands. He broke seven bones in my right hand. I was in and out of the hospital due to an infection that had set in. Two of the seven bones have not healed after 4 1/2 months and my hand is basically paralyzed. I can move my finger tips and feel things but have no other movement.  At this time surgery cannot be done for fear they will break my bones. I will have to undergo injections into my wrist and more PT to try to get movement to strengthen the bones for future surgery.  I am right handed and have been unable to do the things I love to do. The left hand is starting to suffer as well so I will  need injections and PT there as well.  We had taken in this dog from a local rescue to help them out but unfortunately the dog had to be put down after the attack.  It breaks our hearts.  Prior to the dog attack, I had made an Easter video with the dogs and had bunny ears on them. I also took a picture of one of them looking into an empty Easter basket and did a campaign asking for people to fill the basket. I got one donor who has given me $25 every month since then. That was my first campaign since we are new.  Any amount helps because it adds up and we are very thankful. I was hoping to get my husband to help me for Christmas to do a video of the dogs around a Christmas tree with no presents. I was going to put a funny sign up and ask for donations that way.  I think you have to be good at asking for money and that's not what I am. It's hard for me to ask for people to donate however I still try. I am hoping that once I heal that I will get more into learning about how to ask for donations.  I enjoy reading these forums and taking the classes from Maddy's University to learn.

Georgia Heartland Humane Society (GHHS) is focusing its Giving Tuesday and holiday fundraising efforts on providing critical care for pets in need. Many of the animals we rescue arrive with health issues that go beyond routine vaccinations or spay/neuter procedures. Some require extended medical care, recovery time, and additional support before they are ready to find their forever homes.

Our Giving Tuesday campaign, Healing and Hope, aims to ensure that no animal is turned away due to the cost of care. Through the power of community support, GHHS continues to give each pet a second chance at life and love.

This year, we are sharing real stories of recovery and resilience on social media, encouraging "sponsor-a-pet" donations, and involving our dedicated fosters and volunteers in spreading the message. Every contribution-whether financial support, sharing our posts, or volunteering-directly impacts the animals we serve and strengthens our mission as a no-kill, volunteer-based organization.

    • We sell a calendar every year of animals that have been in the program since the previous year. This is sometimes tied to a contest/bidding item to have someone's personal cat on the cover. We have a good relationship with a local printer that keeps our costs low.
    • This is the first year we will have a Tree of Sharing at our local pet store adoption location. We are hoping to stock up on lots of cat litter and other supplies for our facility and foster homes.
    • Lastly, we will have Giving Tuesday campaigns but it is not too fleshed out yet. I'd like to do a social media campaign around "12 Days of Christmas." We are trying a lot of new stuff this year and hoping to find what works.

Thanks for all the ideas, we are considering a Black Friday cat event if we are still overloaded with black cats by the end of November.

In addition to the usual social media and word of mouth fundraising, our rescue does a silent auction, Santa photos and a holiday store. The silent auction will launch on Black Friday to coincide with holiday shopping. Santa photos run through December and we also have a holiday store that people can shop while at photos. The auction and store are stocked with donated items, Santa and the photographers are volunteers. It's a fun time of year!!

Our rescue, Mid Michigan Pug Club, leverages social media as much as we can for the widest reach, mainly using Facebook and Instagram. Our goal for end of the year is to continue focusing on content development as our community enjoys engaging on our posts. Another small step is building up our tiktok account to be able to reach another audience that might not know who we are.

Fundraisers ideas we've started or have coming up include a "Senior Smile Fund" for our senior rescue pugs needing dental work, a T-shirt and hoodie fundraiser and setting up a permanent storefront for our tshirts, hoodies and crewnecks. Another main goal we have is to find a full time fundraiser coordinator and social media roles to better support our organization in different areas. And lastly holding pug meet up events for community involvement and also planning events for the upcoming 2026 year along with building more local business connections.

    Hi there,

My name is Britt Roberts. I am new here and I am excited to learn so much from everyone and also find new ways to help fun my shelter! I am the Animal Care Coordinator for our shelter here in NELA area. We are a cat only shelter! Our end of the year fundraising is a Halloween Bash!! Our Tails at Twilight event is the biggest event/fundraiser of the year! We all come together to enjoy food, drinks, silent auction, and to recognize so many in our community from foster, sponsors, our BOD, and of course our staff that work tirelessly every day to ensure the health and safety of our cats! We are always looking for new ideas to include the community, raise money and awareness, help those in need, and of course educate everyone on the importance of TNR and health care for our pets.

I look forward to reading and engaging in all activities! Thank you all for having me and I hope to learn so much!!! <3

I have recently been appointed to a position that oversees the fundraising aspects of our facility! While I have no real experience in the fundraising side of things, I have worked in Animal Welfare for six years and volunteered at facilities while I was in school. Our facility sends out a mailer every year to our community as an annual appeal. In the previous years it was very numbers-focused; this year I made it my mission to make it more people and animal-focused, as that is what our followers truly care about. People would much rather see what their donation will be going to than just give a general donation.

Our facility also ALWAYS does a giving tree! Giving people the opportunity to "adopt" an animal for the season by buying them gifts! We then make a video showing the animals opening their gifts. It always goes over really well with the community, and we always get much more than we ask for.

We also host pictures with Santa for dogs, cats, and their people, which does not make much in revenue, but it helps build relationships within the community.

    Hello Maddies Pet Forum,

I'm so happy to have come across this wonderful community and look forward to connecting with others who are passionate about animals and human services.
I'd love to share a bit about the organization I work for, Bridges for Brain Injury. We help adults who have experienced traumatic brain injuries or other disabilities rebuild their lives and rediscover a sense of purpose and hope.

One of the most unique parts of our day services program is our Wildlife Rockstars Program, a wildlife and conservation education initiative led by our staff and program members. As part of their rehabilitation, members are trained in the care and handling of native and exotic animals, birds, and reptiles. Through this hands-on work, they gain confidence, rebuild skills, and inspire audiences with both their knowledge of our animal ambassadors and their personal stories of resilience. As far as we're concerned, they ROCK!

As the Wildlife Education Director, I have the privilege of helping both people and animals thrive, it's truly the best of both worlds.

Each November, we host our Wildlife Week Holiday Auction, an online fundraiser where supporters can bid on amazing gift packages and experiences. It's a fun way to find great holiday deals while supporting our animal ambassadors and wildlife education center. Every dollar raised goes directly toward their care and our ongoing educational programs.

Thank you for creating such a welcoming space for animal lovers, I'm thrilled to be part of it and to share in the mission of promoting compassion for all creatures.

It got a lot of engagement and I want to keep doing something similar going forward. We also partner with this awesome brand called Cloud Haven, which makes cute clothes and jewelry featuring rescue dogs, and they often give us a portion of sales and promo codes, so we may do some special ones for this holiday.

At Paw Project of Georgia, our Executive Director sends out mailers to all our previous donors from throughout the year to keep everyone updated and connected with our needs and accomplishments, which really helps when it comes time for year-end donations.

We also run a big online auction each year, collecting nice items and experiences all year long to feature. The auction not only brings in funds but also gets a lot of attention on social media-it's a great way to boost engagement, attract new supporters, and spread the word about what we do.

Combining the mailers with the online auction has worked really well for us. It keeps our donors involved and builds excitement!

I am the founder of US Dog Coalition and Rescue, we don't really focus on year end fundraising goals, it seems that our rescue is too small to compete with the typical fundraisers like Giving Tuesday. The public seems to be drawn to the bigger rescues that are already getting a lion share of the donations like SPCA. We decided to come up with smaller fundraisers throughout the year so we don't put all our "eggs in one basket" so to speak. We decided to do a series of smaller fundraisers throughout the year and continue it into the holidays, in the future we may be in a better position to concentrate on the holidays, but until I get some more fundraising support volunteers, it will focus less on holidays.

MetroWest Humane Society, in all cat shelter and Rescue, in Ashland,Massachusetts, we do both a month-long campaign for giving Tuesday. This is followed by our president writing a lovely end of year wrap up and we have a year-end ask that is usually by mail-in or people can go to our website to donate directly that way.

Because we are a smaller organization, like some of the other comments have mentioned, we do focus a lot on social media. In 2022, we did a similar campaign as we are doing this year for our Giving Tuesday. It spotlights a lot of the medical cats that we've helped this year and that we want to continue to help in the following year. So this gives people who follow us, our local donors, more of an idea of what it is we actually are doing. If they miss contributing in N ovember, the year and ask gives them another opportunity to donate. It also can reach two different audiences. And sometimes we get lucky and we get people that will donate to both.

Another benefit we found from doing the larger campaign in November, is it helps get people motivated to also do different food and supply drives for us for the holidays.

Our organization participates in Giving Tuesday every year. We also plan a couple of local events to raise money for our medical fund. This year we are partnering with another local rescue and having a hypnotist show which we are hoping will be allot of fun for the community. We also will usually have a couple donation campaigns for specific animals in our care. Since most of the animals we take in are medical case or special needs.

While we have multiple campaigns throughout the holiday season my absolute favorite one every year would be our holiday tributes.  Our tribute card and rainbow bridge campaign is active throughout the entire year but over the holidays we encourage people to donate in honor of family and friends. I then send them a Charleston Animal Society holiday card with our logo on the outside and a holiday image inside with the inscription "Charleston Animal Society gratefully acknowledges a contribution from (donor) in honor of (acknowledgee)".  I mail them out one afternoon each week and though we do post on social media about it, it has grown more from word of mouth over the years. I even have some people who will send entire Christmas card lists with a large donation and  postage stamps. One person has done it for so long that her family members now do it too. It isn't the largest fundraiser by any means but it does help bring us into the homes of animal lovers throughout our community.

We are so buys with 2 very large fundraisers earlier in the year that we slow things down a bit. We do Santa photos with kids and pets and that usually brings us a good turnout.  We are in the midst of planning. next years Ladies Nine and Wine as well as hopefully securing a brewery to partner with us to do a pet photo contest for a pet to be on a limited edition special brew label. We us Gogophoto.com They also do pet photo calendar contests too. We will also host a fall "howdown" this year at a place called The Golf Barn. 2026 will be busy!

We are taking this end of year to prepare for next year.  We are going through old files to strategize on grant preparation.  Maybe it feels like that is my involvement is mostly grant related.  =). Also, we are looking at any places that we have overlooked in our grant seeking.  For example, we looked at the Walmart grant and they still had grants available at our local Walmart for the end of the year so obviously we are applying!

Our organization will be participating in a HundredX Cause fundraiser.  You recruit your volunteers and community to do surveys on products they use or stores they visit.  We receive a fee for every survey a person completes.  This is a two-week fundraiser.  We raised $4000 the last time we participated, but there is potential for so much more.  Last year was our first time doing it.

@Jennifer Earp That is awesome. We are hosting our 3rd Hundred X Cause fundraiser in December. This is a great way for people to help without having to spend a dime. The first year we raised about $2000 and the second was close to $4000. Here's hoping we both double our raised funds this year!

@Kathleen Weatherspoon happy to!  HundredX causes is an online fundraiser where participants give feedback on businesses, products and services they use every day. Each person can give up to 75 feedbacks over a one month period. Each feedback is worth $1.60 for your nonprofit. For example if you get 125 people to each give 25 feedbacks at $1.60 each, you will raise $5000. It sounds easy but you do have to put some work into getting people to sign up. We start with our core volunteers and donors and ask them to each ask 5 of their friends. The good part is that HundredX has what they call a toolbox and they provide helpful steps/tips along with sample emails, flyers, social media post ideas. They also provide a dedicated contact if you have any question.

We are a small farm & exotic animal sanctuary and we don't raise as much as one of the larger dog rescues in our area but it is a great way to raise funds and get your supporters involved without asking them to donate money.  Here is their website: https://hundredx.com/ and our contact this year is Molly molly.smith@hundredx.com I'm sure if you reach out to her she would be happy to get you started. Good luck!

Lisa - thank you so much for sharing this information. We are going to look at signing up today. As you know, in our line of support in the community we need to consider all methods of funding. This one is unique and a different ask of our volunteer base. I recognize recruiting folks to participate will be the biggest challenge, but when they realize how easy it is to contribute their time and opinion(s), they might just get hooked. Thank you again!

@Sarah Matula HundredX Causes does not sell any personal information to third parties. We were concerned about that as well.  The only thing they share is the anonymous data from the feedback. They will share your supporters names and emails with your organization if the supporter gives permission. This is good for you to be able to thank them and remind them to do their feedback.

It's hard to imagine the "End-of-the-Year" giving without our gala. We hold an annual gala in November, and it is responsible for a large bulk of our budgeted donations. Unfortunately, it coincides with the preparations we need for our final development push for the year which include a Winter appeal letter, a holiday card and our annual calendar. We can only accomplish all of this with the help of our volunteers who assist us with the design and photographs for our calendar and holiday card and our amazing staff who put all the details together. We also work with volunteers to integrate our social media with our current needs, appeals and mailings to ensure that we are all on the same page. It requires a lot of communications and logistics to get these elements together, and I always feel like we are behind. This year, I have already received a holiday card and appeals from other organizations--and I hope that we can still manage to capture the hearts of our donors for the end of year giving alongside all of the very worthy causes that are asking.  I suggest that you take deep breaths and be kind to yourself when the stress rises, as I know that it can seem overwhelming.

Hello friends!  I am one of the founders of Project Bella Foundation, the driving agency behind the Shelter Slumber Pawty.  We are hosting a Fundraising 101 webinar this week on Wednesday for any agencies interested in joining the 2026 Shelter Slumber Pawty (taking place April 18, 2026)!  Last night, I was pulling some really great information about giving trends for animal welfare that I can't wait to share on Wednesday.

If you aren't familiar with the Shelter Slumber Pawty, check out our facebook page and our website to get a glimpse into the 2025 Pawty where shelters collectively raised over $1million!  It is such a fun event and so incredibly impactful for shelters of all sizes!  I cofounded this event in 2017 while running a shelter that desperately needed funds.  Now that I am not in the day to day at a shelter, I wanted to bring this event to more shelters.  Project Bella supports the platform cost for the event and provides prizes for participating shelters.  You can check out the list of participating agencies on the website.

If you are interested in joining the event (no commitment until January and that's only if you want to officially join us), fill out our interest form so you can be up to date on the 2026 event.  We are not in this to pressure anyone to participate.  We are just a few passionate former-shelter leadership folks that want to help shelters raise money like we did!

    Hope to see you!!!!

As the year comes to a close, we, at the Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor, see end-of-year fundraising as not only an opportunity to raise vital support but also to celebrate the heart of our mission - the animals and people who make our work possible.

Our approach focuses on connection and gratitude. We share stories that highlight the real impact of our community's generosity - from rescued pets finding forever homes to outreach programs helping families care for their animals. These stories remind supporters that every donation, no matter the size, changes lives.

We also emphasize thankfulness and transparency, taking time to recognize donors, volunteers, and partners for their commitment throughout the year. Whether through heartfelt social posts, personal thank-you notes, or behind-the-scenes updates, we aim to make every supporter feel part of our shared success.

Finally, we use this season to build momentum for the year ahead, inviting our community to continue standing with us as we set new goals and expand our reach. It's a meaningful way to end the year with purpose - together.

Were planning BIG! We are about to do a bebe nursery, and trying to divide up a wish list, a need list, and a call for action list for things like plumbers, handy men to help us build our cage bank, etc. This is going to be a big undertaking, but were down for it as the only neonatal rescue in our area!

Hey there we are new here :)

We're still a pretty young rescue, so our donor base is still growing. We might not be pulling in huge numbers yet😅, but we're focused on building real connections that last. Our Giving Tuesday campaign, "Battle of the Buns," is all about sharing the stories of the rabbits we've helped and showing people exactly where their support goes.

It's definitely a slow and steady process, but every new donor feels like a big win. We just want people to see the heart behind what we do and hopefully stick around for the long run.

The holiday season is one of our favorite times at Rocky Mountain French Bulldog Rescue (RMFBR)! Our community comes together to celebrate rescue, raise funds, and spread a little extra Frenchie joy.

Now in its 8th year, our annual calendar fundraiser is one of our biggest and most loved traditions, and it's back again to kick off the season!

We're also excited to announce the return of our Gifts of Hope Holiday Auction, our first in a while. The auction adds even more festive fun, with all proceeds helping fund medical care, transport, and supplies for French Bulldogs in need.

Together, these end-of-year fundraisers make a huge difference for our rescue dogs. Whether you're voting, bidding, or buying a calendar, you're helping us give every Frenchie the gift of hope.

Our organization have created Christmas Quarters. We drop off numerous gallon jugs to businesses to collect quarters for our shelter. We have been very successful with the silent auctions. Our shelter was devastated by Hurricane Helene September 2024, unfortunately the shelter was on hold for fundraising for approximately a year. Bringing the community back together has been a struggle. We will keep fundraising that involves our community, in time the donations hopefully will increase as the shelter opens and gets back into the community.

Pets4Life Louisville is a small non profit in Louisville, KY with the goal of keeping pets healthy and in homes and out of shelters by providing vet clinics and resources to underserved areas. We are so small and so focused on serving that we haven't done supporter events and fundraising initiatives until recently so we are doing several things. The big thing is an online countdown to Christmas advent calendar where each day of the week, we ask for that amount of money for something that will help an animal in the community. For example, Dec 22, we will ask for $22 donations to sponsor a dog at a wellness clinic.

    Hello everyone!

I am new here.  My organization is after a few different things. First we have a Chocolate, Wine, and Purse Dinner. You buy a ticket and enjoy a dinner and your ticket includes your dinner some wine and chocolate tasting and then you can join in raffles for purses. We also have Christmas basket raffles. Something I really love though is we are building a new building. This is a different fundraiser I guess one would say, but you can by parts of the building as it is being built or an entire section or kennel/stall and dedicate it to someone. My family bought/sponsored a stall. This one is my favorite and I will explain why.. The public may not fully understand but this shelter is fully 100% volunteers only. We are desperately looking for donations and grants, working together for anything we can find. Our founder is working so hard and has well over 120 and rooms full of cats, but each animal he has is so well taken care of and loved. He puts his heart and sole into each animal as do the volunteers. We have facebook donation links, websites, etc. I am reading all of your ideas as well and I am so thankful! We have done paint and sips before as well. Whatever it takes.

Thank you for all you do!

We're hoping that the prize eligibilty helps encourage donors. We haven't had that in the past for our fall events.

Hello, I am not only new to Maddie's Fund but I am also pretty green in the animal welfare community. The organization I am volunteering for is Lakeshore Animal Friends (LAF) out of Ludington, MI. I do know that LAF puts out a newsletter every year, to let their supporters know about their year and what they still hope to accomplish. As I am new to the group I don't know much else about their fundraising plans but I am very excited to share what I am learning about through this thread!

Thank you all for the fantastic ideas.
