  • 1.  Resource to buy reasonable cat food?

    Posted 04-18-2023 04:50 PM

    Hi everyone.
I always say that Garden City Community Cats Project doesn't really rescue cats. We rescue the caregivers that rescue the cats. We give out about $1000 of cat food a month to our colony caregivers so they can continue to feed and care for their cats. This helps guarantee that they will continue caring for the cats without a hardship to themselves and continues our relationship so that we can spay and neuter any new cats for them for free.

GCCCP puts out a newsletter every two months to get the community caught up on all the work that we have been doing. We have a wish list on both Amazon and Chewy. Supports loved ordering food off our wish list, and after the newsletter went out it looked like Christmas at my door. But reasonable cat food has become nonexistent on Amazon. Everything says out of stock, so nothing comes. Chewy has a few reasonable brands I will ask for. Even if community members go to the trouble to pick up bags of food from stores they're hard to find.

    Has anyone noticed this?

So my question is does anyone know a source for low cost cat food. Even wholesale. We wouldn't mind buying a large amount for a discount price, even a reasonable price. I'm looking for a dollar a pound. I don't distribute food that is mostly corn and filler. No animal deserves that.

Hi! Have you looked into getting bulk food for free from your local Amazon warehouses, Chewy, Petsmart, and other large local stores? Many places will dump torn bags or nearly-expired food that's still perfectly good to eat, but folks who build relationships with them can often get called to pick up free food before it goes in the trash. Some of them also have programs to proactively distribute food. If you haven't yet, I'd definitely start asking around in your area!

Hi Maria. We have tried a number of these  Resources but dried cat food doesn't seem to be anywhere. We have scored a lot of litter which our caregivers are really happy about.  I don't understand why there aren't wholesale outlets for rescues. We even looked at Alibaba.com  but really don't know about it.

I'm not from your area, but for our community cats here in Karachi we use a local homemade food service called Billi Treats. Maybe check if there's something similar near you?? Small local brands are often more affordable and nutritious than store food. It could be more economical too. All the best and much love to kitties :)

I'm not sure their qualifications but we just signed on with Adopt a Pet Shelter Plus Pet Food Program and they have seriously discounted prices on high quality food. But I'm not sure if they are only a Shelter resource or if they also help other organizations.

We use the house brand from Costco - $26 or so for a 40 pound bag.  Good quality ingredients - it is made for Costco by Wellness -

    Greetings, Rebecca,

Can you define seriously discounted prices on quality food with a more numerical number?  Community Cat Angels is a small foster- only rescue, which is a choice on their application.  I'd just like to have a better idea about the possible discounts before I apply for our org.

Thank you in advance.  Regards, Kat

We're signed up through Purina to get discounts on their food.  Here is the link to get started: https://www.proplanvet.com/p4p

See if you have a Goods Ambassador in your area. The Goods Program offers food and litter at .15c per pound. The downside is that it's dependent on when the ambassadors receive a truck, and sometimes they are few and far between. The food may be sourced through open bag donations (from Chewy I think), which are mixed brand pallets with bags taped up, or sometimes manufacturers donate and there's a whole pallet of one thing available. Sometimes they are near or just over expiration dates. Despite it not being a reliable source it's been a valuable program for us.

When we aren't getting any Good trucks to purchase from we buy the 25lb purple bags at Costco for $22.50. It doesn't meet WSAVA standards, if that's important to you, but it's not bad food for the price.

We joined the Petfinder shelter program and it offers discounts (50% if I recall correctly) off Purina Pro Plan and prescription lines. These are too costly for us but if you're buying those already it's a great discount.
