We hope to see you on the next Maddie's Community Conversation on Monday, December 1, 2025 at 11am PT / 2pm ET  for "Accessible Pet Grooming Services for Underserved Populations," a conversation with @TERRYL Daluz and @Andrea Carter from Loving Paws Inc.

Access to affordable and inclusive pet grooming services remains a significant challenge for many underserved communities, including the unhoused population, low-income households, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and residents of rural areas. This presentation examines the increasing demand for equitable pet care resources and highlights how accessible grooming services can enhance animal health, foster stronger human–animal bonds, and reduce shelter relinquishment. We will examine barriers such as transportation limitations, financial constraints, and the scarcity of pet-friendly community programs. Additionally, we present innovative service models-including mobile grooming units, community-based partnerships, and subsidized care programs-that expand reach while maintaining quality and compassion. By identifying practical strategies and sharing successful case examples, this session aims to inspire stakeholders, service providers, and policymakers to collaborate in creating sustainable, inclusive grooming solutions that keep pets healthy and families together.

This session is especially relevant for adoptions and foster staff & volunteers, return to home and intake prevention staff, veterinary professionals, behavior staff & volunteers, marketing and communications staff, field services/animal control officers, grant writers/fundraisers - but all are welcome!

    🔑 Key Takeaways:

    • Pet care is a public-health and dignity issue-not a luxury. Affordable grooming helps prevent skin infections, matting, parasites, and other health issues that affect both pets and their owners' well-being. Supporting these services is supporting community health.

    • Access barriers-not lack of love-prevent many from caring for their pets. Transportation challenges, cost, and limited service locations mean many unhoused or low-income pet owners can't obtain grooming, even though they care deeply for their animals. Outreach-based or mobile solutions directly address these structural barriers.

    • Small contributions create big impact. Whether through volunteering, donating supplies, funding mobile grooming units, or spreading awareness, individuals and organizations can play a meaningful role in keeping pets healthy and families together.

Don't forget! $10,000 in grants each month! Maddie's Fund will be giving away up to $10,000 in grants each month! You can enter for a chance to win each time you attend a call or watch it on demand during the month by completing the monthly giveaway drawing entry form

Yesterday's conversation was great. Thank you @TERRYL Daluz and @Andrea Carter for sharing your lived experience and thoughtful approach to supporting people and pets in the community.

I think in response to the reflection question - it made me think back to when I first got a dog who needed regular grooming (something my previous dogs never needed). Even with years of experience in the animal well-being field, I didn't know where to start when it came to finding a groomer or understanding the costs. I imagine many people feel the same way. That's why I think connecting pet owners to local shelters, low-cost grooming options, or trusted community resources can make a big difference. I'd also add that supporting individuals, organizations, or small businesses through fundraising can help ensure grooming services are accessible to everyone.

This question caught my attention, in my State of TN, we have a Program called TN Promise Program. Students, high schoolers & new College kids are required to perform 8 hrs of SERVICE work each month! My organization offers this academic & educational opportunities. students volunteer for me for 2 years, the students get 2 YEARS FREE COLLEGE! I have got over 70 kids into FREE COLLEGE! One of our projects is to "shampoo dogs at Tractor Supply for the elderly and disabled" and people who cannot afford the $10 cost at the Pet Wash Station...Let the students do it! My students think it's fun and they keep showing up even if NOT required? I am BLESSED! Plus, I was AWARDED the GRANT of FREE SPAY/NEUTER from my State of TN! Yeah me! My suggestion is maybe you can find a similar program through the Educational System and check with local High Schools, Tech Schools, Colleges, you might just be delighfully surprised the amount of helpers you can get, especially if it counts to further education goals!

    Hello Mary,

That is amazing!  This sounds like an outstanding program!  I am always interested in finding ways to work with our youth.   To be able to combine grooming is a great idea.   I will look into it.  Thank you!

Terry, thanks for your lovely comments! I keep my eye on the ball, stay on top of my game and stick to my goal..."It is my VISION to be my MISSION to see it to FRUITION"!....Look at ALL the resources available, at hand, that can be turned into "opportunities"! You want SUCCESS instead of settling...This VISION also helps in your "creative writing skills" for GRANTS and developing a Volunteer Platform! , Because of my 4 Siberian Huskies & 2 German Shepherds......OK, onto FUNDING....ALWAYS TRY to get the Endowments & ALWAYS,..put extra funding in High Yield Savings Accounts, if your Organization is running low, you can ALWAYS just pull the interest funding without touching the Principal Amount! High Yield Savings Accounts :  be careful which ones you chose, make sure NO FEES, NO CHARGES,  NO TIME LIMITS,  ALWAYS STAY LIQUID, make sure there is an Emergency Fund(s) and make sure your Organization has a Successor on Record, in case, something happens to CEO & CFO...Giving you some of my best, Mary Murray, LadywiththeHuskies! As a groomer and business owner, my impact doesn't just come from picking up my tools, it comes from picking up the pets and people who need someone to care. Grooming, for me, has never been just a service. It's a calling. It's a way to restore comfort, dignity, and love to animals who can't speak for themselves. Also, a way to build a relationship with the owner and the pet.  It also is a good time to educate the owner about grooming without judging, but showing them what the pet requires, they walk away feeling empowered.

When a pet is matted, uncomfortable, or overlooked because their family can't afford grooming,  or pet owner has passed on and now the pet is with family who have never had a pet.  Or LIFE  has just decided to LIFE. I feel that in my heart. I see the fear, the pain, the confusion and or embarrassment . And I know that with patience, gentleness, and time, I can give that pet relief and a fresh start. I've held pets that were breaking inside and watched them transform the moment the weight of their coat and their stress was lifted. They were like new pets, refreshed and ready for a great start.

Through LC'S Detroit Pet Salon and LC'S Foundation, I make sure finances never stop a pet from getting the care they deserve. Whether it's offering free or low-cost grooming, partnering with the Michigan Humane Society, or stepping in for cruelty cases and families in crisis, I show up because every animal deserves to be seen, touched gently, and treated with kindness.

My impact is personal. It's in the wag of a tail after a grooming session. It's in a relieved owner who feels supported rather than judged. It's in knowing that, even if I can't fix the world, I can change this moment for this pet locally and internationally.

That's what drives me.  Sometimes the smallest thing that could be huge for someone else, or make an impact.  You never know, so if I feel the need to do a nail trim or a groom for free, or clean up the dogs face , or do a tidy on them/sanitary clean. I am not only helping that pet, but I am helping that person.  It could be are conversation as they are telling me about themselves or how much their pet means to them, or how they ended up with their pet . I enjoy those  moments. That human connection.  I could go on and on.  That's why I do what I do. And that's how I know I'm making a difference. One pet, one family, one act of compassion at a time.

This is a really interesting question because I never really thought about it until now; I think the one thing is just watching and listening with intention - I think a lot of folks don't know what resources are available or what the longer-term impacts are in these situations. Appreciate the conversation.

I truly appreciate the knowledge that was given.  What kind and beautiful hearts.  My take aways were benefits we need to acknowledge are: to be sure we announce our appreciation of volunteers (possibly shout out on FB or other social media), the sense of belonging is one I hadn't thought of  (let the volunteers know they are part of our small yet determined pack) and of course that their co-workers (4 legged and 2legged) are the most amazing creatures!

First, thank you to Terry and Andrea for the important work they are doing in their community to support pets and their owners. As I listened and watched the videos they shared, I kept coming back to how the work we are all doing as it relates to our fur friends is so connected to how much we are putting ourselves out there to build relationships with people in the community needing support. Continuing to educate ourselves so we can refine our own practices in our lanes of expertise is invaluable to providing support, but also being well connected with ALL of the support organizations in our community so we have more to offer pet owners as next steps when and if needed. After all, we are ambassadors of support to more than just our fur friends. Each time I attend a Community Conversation, I consistently hear that we are all committed to promoting compassion and offering vital assistance to vulnerable members of the community and their companion animals. This just fills my heart. At the core of what our organizations do, we are all working to help keep pets and their owners together, which is so important because pets often provide a critical source of emotional support, comfort, and stability to people experiencing hardship.

Thank you,  Daniel!  We are glad that you enjoyed the conversation.    We love the work that we do!  It is not easy, and funding can be limited.   You have to do what you can do, with whatever you have.  When you do the work, someone will recognize your efforts.   Your passion will move others to want to help you.  Stay connected with organizations like Maddies.    Network with others who are doing something similar to see what resources are out in your community.   There are small grants for small rescues out there.    Your heart is in the right place, so keep up the good work!  It will pay off.  I wish you the best!

    Hello April,

That's amazing!  Being able to help these helpless fur babies get a better shot at finding their forever home is important.  We do crowdfunding on social media, posting stories about the pets that we help and asking for donations.  There are small grants that you can apply for that assist with funding for grooming  (Red Rover,  PetSmart, etc).   You can research grants from different Foundations that want to help get pets adopted.   I hope I helped some!  Good luck in all your endeavors!

    Call Recap

    Welcome from hosts

    • Debra Olmedo, Director, Patitas y Palabras
    • Sheila Kouhkan, Senior Education Specialist, Maddie's Fund

Question of the Day: What's something new you're implementing into your fundraising this Giving Season (e.g., messaging, outreach, etc.), and what inspired this idea?

    • "We launched soft messaging for Giving Tuesday with a goal of $4700 for new fencing. We surpassed the goal and hit $9800! We are celebrating!" - Patti Denny
    • "More Social Media Presence - We want to get the word out to help more pets." - Terryl Daluz
    • "We're having our board reach out to our major donors in December for the first time. Inspired by the AAWA conference fundraising sessions." - Kristen Petty
    • "We branded our GA Gives campaign as "Grant a wish for pets in need" to differentiate us from other messages. Also, promoting DAf and stock giving." - Marci Reynolds
    • "Our directors are making personal phone calls to donors of all sizes to thank them for their support." - Mary Flores
    • "This Giving Season, we're implementing a stronger storytelling-driven approach that centers the real experiences of Animal Control Officers and shelter workers." - Dana Hawks
    • "We are offering fun rewards for certain $ amount donations - naming rights for a rescue, paintings by our rescue pets, kiss from a pet, etc." - Robin Lissner
    • "We are new, but here at Lilac City Pup Project we have a relationship with a small local pet store. They agreed to do a fundraiser for us and donated several large gift baskets and held a raffle on Shop Local Saturday. They raised about $3,000 for us!" - Rebecca Bigelow
    • "We implemented Raisley - a fundraising software that lets you create beautiful campaigns that can be easily customized, including your branding (color, fonts). The donation form is great - user-friendly. Our group started this year, so we are in the learning stage :) I am happy to learn from experts here!" - Alexa Kyler
    • "We implemented adding in had written thank you notes to bigger donations- rather than just the auto emails they get" - Cassie Boyle
    • "ED Reached out to all lapsed donors about our giving Tuesday campaign. Already received over $2k from them" - Robin Lissner

Presentation: Accessible Pet Grooming Services for Underserved Populations

    Highlights from the Chat

    • "There are so many amazing jobs that involve love for animals (outside of vet med)! We definitely need to help advertise them for our next generation!" - Debra Olmedo
    • "Because sometimes that animal is a person's last tether." - Dana Hawks
    • "My daughter passed away suddenly. She was a very dedicated animal advocate all her life. Our group was formed to keep her legacy alive. We have been advocating for 5 years now. Been very successful helping lots of animal." - Jo Lunsford
    • "There is a great book 'My Dog Always Eats First" about the unhoused and their pets." - Roxane Fritz
    • "As a worker at a nonprofit, it's crazy to see how just one groom can make them get adopted within a couple days of that." - Abigail Vernon
    • "A similar model to look at is BestyBNB, which partners with social service organizations to find temporary petsitting for those who are dealing with life's struggles and need a place to land. The social service organizations set aside some funding to pay pre-approved pet sitters to watch animals while owners are in the hospital/rehab/etc. I have worked as a pet sitter through them for over a year now." - Alyssa Marcy
    • "Thank you for this reminder about the importance of wellness - while there is a veterinary shortage, there are ways we can keep animals healthy and safe. Which in turn keeps the person healthy and safe!" - Allison Cardona
    • "It's sad when people feel helpless and ashamed to ask for help." - Lisa Pearce
    • "Thank you for doing this great work in your community. You are making a difference!" - Patti Denny
    • "That demonstrates dignity, too." - Lisa Pearce
    • "You two are very inspiring! Gives me more energy for my work. Bless you." - Nancy Louie
    • "Thank you, @Drea Carter and Terry, you forgot to mention how physically and emotionally draining your work can be. No single word of complaint, just facts and the need that is out there. For this incredible work, thank you! We all know how much effort it is, just want you to know this." - Alexa Kyler
    • "Thank you, Terryl and Drea! Appreciate the work you and Loving Paws do every day in the community! I loved being able to ride along with Terryl earlier this year and visit a couple interim housing shelters to witness the incredible work in person." - Charlotte Otero
