February 2025 Giveaway: How Are You Supporting Pets and People in Your Community?

  • 1.  February 2025 Giveaway: How Are You Supporting Pets and People in Your Community?

🐾  When people thrive, animals do too. Community sheltering focuses on extending care and resources beyond the shelter to keep pets and families together. The more we help pet owners—especially those facing housing insecurity, financial hardship, or crisis—the fewer animals end up in shelters and the stronger our communities become.

That's why so many organizations are shifting from a shelter-centric model to one that provides resources before a pet needs to be surrendered. Whether it's pet food pantries, behavior support, access to veterinary care, temporary fostering for people in crisis, or partnerships with social service agencies, these efforts help keep pets where they belong: with their families.

How are you or your organization working to support both pets and their people?

Let's share ideas, success stories, and lessons learned to inspire each other!

    Hi Everyone!
Fundraising Idea  -  Informing others of volunteering!

I've been a re-seller for many years on the side. Besides supporting the ASPCA, and my volunteer work, I started listing items on eBay with a percentage going to my charity (Bruno Project Rescue).  I put small flyers in packages I send out and  I added my rescue to my profile on all my selling sites. People are commenting in positive ways! One buyer said she just came back from Saint Lucia and would have brought a dog back had she known, plus she'll bring one back on her next trip.  People are commenting on the selling sites about our rescue.

I am exploring a new selling idea to list with  100% of all sales going to for our rescue. I'm talking to my other volunteers to add to it! We all have extra clothing and things we can let go of and why not put the extra money to a great cause! Look around and see what you can let go. Add your rescue to your profile if you list items on Poshmark, Mercari, eBay, etc.

    just an idea!

Better Together Pet Resource Center is a new organization in Niagara Falls, NY.  Better Together works 'upstream' by providing resources to pet owners so they can avoid surrendering pets to already overworked animal shelters and rescue organizations.  Better Together provides microchips so pets more easily return to their homes, a pet food/supplies pantry, as well as subsidized veterinary care, spay/neuter, and emergency boarding. Better Together actively listens to our community to prioritize services provided.

The Summit County Pet Food Pantry in Colorado is striving to FEED THEM ALL, by providing pet food through our community food banks, mobile food banks, community medical clinics, and Community College. We are privileged to be supported by our local community, local pet food stores, local Veterinary Offices, and the Colorado Pet Pantry.  We are committed to animal welfare and preserving pets as part of families and preventing their surrender to the shelters.

    Hi all,

The rescue I've started volunteering for has helped pets and people by organizing transportation and rescuing cats in need from the LA fires. This also helps locals there by helping reduce overpopulation of local rescues. It's also providing much needed support to pet owners in need during this emergency.

    Best,

Though our organization, Daphne Cats, Inc., was primarily set up to support trappers, community cat caregivers and all those involved in TNR endeavors in our County of Brevard.  As of late, we have been called and accepted the challenge of supporting the local domestic violence shelter that accepts pets but only after they have been vetted.  They require a parasite free fecal result and proof of vaccinations.  Most women and families fleeing their abusers get out with very little in the way of vet records.  Having their pets  turned away at the door of the shelter increases the risk that they will return to their abusers.  We have stepped in to go and get the animal(s)  anytime day or night.  We foster them and get them the vet care they need so that they can be allowed back in the shelter with their families.  Daphne Cats pays the expenses and even pays for other healthcare needs such as dentals and medication.  Our primary goal is to support high risk individual mothers, children and pets of domestic violence!

Genesee County Animal Control (GCAC) and Shelter Animal Donations (SAD) take a multi-prong approach in helping the people of our community and their animals. Of course, this is made possible through donations and grants.

    • Community food pantry - people are able to come in and get dog or cat food once a month. This has allowed people to keep their animals at home that would have otherwise surrendered them to animal control. The challenge is having enough food available to meet the demand.
    • Heartworm care post-adoption - We have an arrangement with a local veterinary office to provide heartworm treatments for dogs recently adopted from GCAC that started their treatment with us but still need to complete the series.  At adoption, the adopter is asked how much they can contribute to the treatments, say $50, and GCAC/SAD covers the remaining cost. The local veterinary office bills us directly providing the dogs' names for our tracking purposes.
    • We offer vaccine clinics 2 to 3 times a year for cats and dogs. These clinics provide owners a way to keep their animals healthy and not have to take away money used for their own food and housing needs.
    • TNR for community cats - During part of the year, we provide spay/neuter surgeries for community cats. We have found many people in the community who feed the strays but can't afford to take them into veterinary offices to be fixed. This allows the community to manage the numbers of cats they are feeding. If needed, we also loan out traps to the community.
    • Additionally, Shelter Animal Donations plans fundraising events within the community such as golf outings, bake sales, bowling, bingo, and holiday events like our Witches Run and Easter Egg hunt by partnering with local businesses and community involvement.

These activities are important to provide to our community as our county in 2023 had a poverty rate of 16.4%, and the main city of Flint, MI had a poverty rate of 33.3%.  Michigan's overall poverty rate in 2023 was 13.5% and the national rate was 11.1%. Genesee County has many populations of concern that must make tough decisions on a limited budget. Pet care costs compete with the costs of food, rent, utilities, transportation and medical care. High prices for necessities like food, rent and gas only exacerbate the problem and make GCAC/SAD's assistance critical to keep pets with their owners.

We have a pet food & supply pantry in our lobby, a free TNR program that includes assistance in trapping and transport, provide free outdoor cat houses, twice yearly vaccine clinics with free combo vaccines and low-cost rabies vaccines, low-cost microchipping, we host mobile spay/neuter clinics (not run by us, but we provide a place for them to set up and do promotion), and we partner with local homeless coalitions to provide them with blankets, towels, household goods, etc., that we either can't use ourselves or have excess of. We also host human blood drives at our facility.

Our goal is to open a low-cost vet clinic, which do not exist in our county currently, but is sorely needed.

Regarding the Witch's Run fundraiser ... We hold it in October at a local sports bar that supports our non-profit, Shelter Animal Donations (SAD). Tickets are around $35 and that includes one drink and a light food buffet. There are prize baskets with items in them donated by local businesses and the baskets themselves are put together by volunteers. There are also raffle tickets sold at the event for other basket drawings. In addition, participants are encouraged to come in costume, and we have contests for the scariest witch and the prettiest witch with winners picking out a gift basket. The winners are decided by the applause of the people in the sports bar. The highlight event is our tricycle races. We have 3-4 trikes with multiple races until all who want to race have completed it - winner gets a prize. Everyone cheers the riders on.

I've attached some pictures and a link to a video of one of the races (hope the link works). (9) Facebook

    Hello, Rescue Family.

At Bruno Project Rescue, we are deeply committed to supporting both pets and the people who love them. As a nonprofit animal rescue, our focus is on saving dogs from high-risk situations in Saint Lucia, the Caribbean, and across the United States. In addition, we also prioritize the well-being of the people who welcome them into their homes. We don't just rescue animals – we believe that dogs often rescue people in return, providing companionship, healing, and unconditional love. These amazing animals transform lives, whether through emotional support, companionship, or even by simply offering a sense of purpose.

Our mission goes beyond just bringing dogs to safety, we believe that fostering a deep connection between pets and their people is vital for long-term happiness and success. Our work extends beyond rescue, as we also provide education and resources to help pet owners make informed decisions about animal care. Whether it's post-adoption support, promoting responsible pet ownership, or advocating for spaying and neutering, we aim to make a lasting impact on both animals and the communities that embrace them.

Dogs aren't the only ones that need to be rescued – dogs have a unique way of rescuing us, too. From supporting mental health to bringing joy in times of hardship, the bond between people and dogs is transformative. We are proud to raise awareness globally, not only about the plight of stray and abandoned dogs, but also about the healing power they offer in return. Through partnerships with shelters, veterinarians, and animal welfare organizations, we continue to expand our reach and amplify the incredible benefits that come from rescuing a dog and letting them rescue you right back.

About 70% of our community is Military affiliated, so we are working towards a military support program for pet retention, resources and financial help with PCS/deployment/TDY struggles when it comes to moving with or boarding their animals. We are also looking to start a veteran program for adoptions as well. Being able to help them will greatly help us in return.

One of the biggest ways we help support our community, is by helping Veteran's. We do a lot of Veteran boarding of dogs and cats when people are in need as well as we pay a lot of medical care for Veteran's in need. We also have a community pet food pantry where we give food and pet supplies to people in need. We get the community involved with our organization by recruiting fosters for dog field trips and furloughs as well as fosters during kitten season.

Our shelter provides low cost spay/neuter clinics, low cost vaccine clinics, and food pantry. We also do a clinic at the salvation army once a month to provide free vet care to the homeless population. We have done a mobile spay/neuter clinic at the department of aging that was heavily discounted for veterans.

We are deeply committed to supporting both pets and people in our community through a variety of essential programs and services. One of our key initiatives is our pet pantry, which offers food and supplies to those in need. This pantry is stocked with items donated to us that we cannot use in the shelter, ensuring that nothing goes to waste and that pets in the community have access to the resources they need to stay healthy and happy.

In addition to the pet pantry, we have our Rae of Hope program, which provides free basic preventative care to low-income seniors. This program ensures that seniors on a fixed income can still provide their pets with necessary health care, including vaccinations and routine check-ups, without the burden of additional costs.

We also offer regular low-cost vaccines, spay and neuter surgeries, and humane euthanasia services to the public. These services are crucial in helping to control the pet population, prevent the spread of diseases, and provide compassionate end-of-life care when needed. By making these services affordable and accessible, we aim to support pet owners in providing the best possible care for their families.

Additionally, we recently brought in over 60 pets affected by the LA wildfires. Most of these animals went to pre-selected foster homes immediately upon arrival to help them acclimate to the change. We then held an adoption event the following weekend, where we successfully adopted out 80 pets! This effort not only provided these animals with the care and shelter they needed as well as created more space in the California shelters to bring in displaced pets but also helped them find loving forever homes.

Through these programs, we strive to make a positive impact on the lives of pets and their owners, ensuring that everyone in our community has access to the care and support they need.

  • 26.  RE: February 2025 Giveaway: How Are You Supporting Pets and People in Your Community?

    Posted 02-03-2025 04:36 PM

    Hello everybody!!

I'm the Operations Manager at a non-profit animal rescue in Washington State, called Josie's Misfit Ranch (JMR). JMR specializes in taking in animals so are "wounded in body and spirit." This means we take in animals who are sick, old, pregnant, young litters, abandoned, abused, and neglected. We had a record number of stray kittens (barely a week old) in 2024! Taking care of those babies is a lot of work, including bottle feeding and helping them potty every 2-3 hours, vet care, keeping them warm in an incubator, and sometimes being with them in their final moments (it's hard for a newborn to survive without its mama). We have taken in several blind dogs, one-eyed dogs and cats, 15-year-old dogs and cats struggling with health issues, like cancer, and so much more. We give each animal the same level of care and love that we would give our own animals.

This last year, we launched our Seniors for Seniors program, which enables a qualified senior citizen from our community to be the permanent foster of one of our senior animals. This allows the senior animals to go to a safe, happy, and loving home, and also gives the senior citizen the companionship they're craving. We pay all expenses (vet visits, food, supplies, etc.) and the senior citizen supplies all the love and care.

Our goal for 2025 is to start a program in which we can help animals and survivors or domestic violence cases.

JMR was started when our owner, Marla Pugh, was living in North Carolina. She went to the local shelter to look at adoptable dogs and found one she just couldn't part with... Josie! She was scheduled to be euthanized just an hour away from the time Marla found her, all because she was a "scary" pitbull. It turned out Josie was the sweetest living creature on the planet and just needed some extra love. Marla made it her mission to help other animals who were turned away just because they are "imperfect" or considered "misfits."

Since JMR's birth in 2022, we have helped over 200 animals with the help of our board members, donors/sponsors, volunteers, fosters, and the entire community. We're a young organization, but we have so many lofty goals for 2025 and beyond. We know we can't save them all, but by doing everything in our power to help these animals, it takes a little bit of weight off of the bigger problem.

If you'd like more information about what we do, I'll add the link to our website below.

Thank you so much for your time!

We assist the homeless shelter; if a resident needs to stay at the homeless shelter, we will either arrange for the pet to stay with them (update vaccines, provide crates, etc.) or house the pet while the resident is there.
We assist the county sheriff's office. If there is an arrest or wreck with an animal involved, we respond. We will house and/or transport the pet to a family member.
Today, we partnered with one of the local hospice organizations to accept a dog whose owner passed away.  The owner's wishes were to euthanize the dog.  There is one son who was recently paroled to a halfway house in Arizona and a daughter whose whereabouts are unknown.  The owner was once a resident at our local homeless shelter.  According to the social worker, her wishes were to euthanize the dog and place his ashes with hers.  The son wasn't sure and mentally was in no shape to make that decision today -so the dog, the perfect gentleman, is sheltering with us until we can decide.  But this big, ole, sweet boy has a lot of life left in him.
We provide food and dog houses to those in need in the community.
Honestly, we improvise and fill in where we can.

Life of Kai is a small nonprofit founded in 2021 with a mission to support rescues, fosters, and the community in keeping pets and people together. In 2023, we partnered with The Street Coalition in Sacramento to provide behavior services for pets of the unhoused. Through this work, we saw a critical need for essential equipment like harnesses and leashes to help keep pets safe and under control. We were able to replace choke and prong collars with sturdy, more humane harnesses.

In 2024, we joined DPAW (Davis Pet Advocacy and Wellness), a free clinic run by UC Davis veterinary students and faculty. Thanks to funding from the Open Arms Challenge, we were thrilled to expand our support-providing equipment, behavior services, and warm coats for both pets and their guardians at both locations.

This past Thanksgiving, we hosted a coat giveaway where we provided pre-Thanksgiving turkey sandwiches and pumpkin pies to 100 participants. During the holiday season, we distributed 50 pairs of socks and hand warmers. These guardians deeply love their pets, treat them as family, and cherish the basic necessities that help them get through each day. During the cold and rainy season, we continue to give away dog jackets at the free clinic held the first Saturday of each month. We have already gifted 50 warm dog jackets since last November.

We are incredibly grateful to Maddie's Fund for making it possible to support both pets and their people. Our work reinforces the One Health approach-the recognition that the well-being of people, animals, and the environment are deeply interconnected. By caring for both pets and their guardians, we are fostering healthier communities for all.

At Star City TNR and Rescue, we understand that the bond between community cat caretakers and the cats they care for runs deep. These caretakers provide love and protection to cats who may not live in homes, but they still deserve our support. We help strengthen that bond by providing TNR services, food, shelters, and medical care when needed.

🐾 TNR & Community Cat Care: Our TNR services help ensure that community cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and returned to their caretakers who love them, whether it's a colony of cats or a single outdoor cat. We also help with feral shelters and feeding programs to make sure the cats are cared for in a humane and sustainable way.

🐾 Adoption & Foster Care for Socialized Cats and Kittens: In addition to helping community cats, we take in adoptable cats who need a little extra care to adjust to life indoors. From kittens to adult cats, we provide veterinary care, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and socialization to ensure they are ready to find their forever homes. Every cat in our care is given the attention and support they need to thrive, whether they are on the shy side or already seeking out cuddles.

🐾 Setting Fosters & Adopters Up for Success: Our goal is to ensure both the cats and the people who adopt them are set up for success. We offer support and resources to our fosters and adopters, helping them understand the cats' needs and providing guidance for any challenges along the way.

We know how much the bond between cats and people means, whether they are community cats cared for outdoors or adoptable cats finding new homes. By offering resources to caretakers and support to adopters, we ensure that both the cats and the people who care for them have the tools they need to thrive.

How does your organization support the human-animal bond for both community cats and adoptable pets? Let's share ideas and inspire each other!

Supporting pets and the people that love them is a huge part of the mission of the organization that I founded last summer in memory of my dachshund, Bobo. The Bobo Fund helps pay for prescription medications and food for pets with chronic illnesses when their owners are faced with financial hardship. We recognize the importance of both these medications in maintaing a pet's quality of life, but also the financial burden is places on pet owners, especially when they are faced with a crisis like loss of employment or housing or personal medical bills. Being able to provide for one's pet and keeping them happy and healthy helps the people who love them just as much as the pet. Please feel free to check out The Bobo Fund - thebobofund.org

Many people are forced to give up their pets due to economic pressures.  Our mission is to keep pets with their families by providing free pet food and free spay and neuter services to veterans, senior citizens, the disabled and those experiencing financial hardship.  By keeping pets with their families, we hope to reduce the number of animals in the animal shelter.

Our organization started in January 2024.  Last year we fed 3,087 pets and spayed/neutered 111 pets.  We also started a TNR program and fixed 145 cats.

    website: https://spayedandaid.org

    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/spayedandaidky/

In February 2024, we needed to get food to start the Pet Food Pantry so we developed our Love for Pawz Community Pet Food Donation Drive.  We signed up 11 sites across the county and collected 1100 pounds of food from local residents.  (We live in a small rural community -- largest city is population of 7K and county population total is 23K.)  That food and the community involvement started us down our path to helping pets and people.

We decided to run the Love for Pawz event every February.  We run it for the full month.  I'm ELATED to tell you that this year we have 28 sites collecting food/money donations for our pet food pantry.  Our goal was 20 sites. We are excited to see the community come together to help others.   There seems to be a genuine excitement everywhere we go about the community coming together over pet food.   Here are photos of (a) the local bank promoting themselves as a drop off location for our charity and (b) a local club collected pet food for us.

Additionally, we are getting media coverage for our efforts.  Listen to the interview link below.

    Hi Folks:

The past year I have been working in outreach for a small county rescue/ animal welfare organization. We are a rural county that has limited access to veterinary care. The organization has been providing food to the animals of unhoused folks; they provided mobile spay neuter and vaccine clinic down at our local encampment last spring.  Since then I have been working with some of our local human resources folks in serving primarily unhoused or the housing insecure with their 4-footed family.  We provided flea and tick preventative in season and provide transport to and reduced/no cost S/N and core vaccines for cats and dogs when the human accepts our offer of services.  We partnered with low cost clinics, both pop-up/mobile and those in a city 1+ hour away for these services. In a few cases we were able to help with arranging veterinarian services for animals that were either sick or injured though our funds are very limited for those services.

We have a major supporter who use a bequeath of money to cover most of this work in the 1st year.  We also get food donations.  Originally got food supplied by Amazon but that dried up last year so we have gotten donations from more local stores such as Country Store.  The challenge will be to continue the work without what was essentially seed money and we are exploring additional funding sources.  We are really beginning to get the word out and have a member that has ideas that we will be implementing to expand our funding.

Hi All! Here at the Humane Society of Pinellas, one of our most impactful programs is our Senior Pet Connection, which helps homebound seniors continue caring for their beloved pets. We deliver pet food and supplies right to their doors, easing financial and physical burdens so they don't have to worry about how to provide for their furry companions. For many seniors, these pets are more than animals-they're family, providing comfort, companionship, and emotional support. It's an impactful shelter diversion program and by keeping these pets and their owners together, making a difference in their lives and strengthening the human-animal bond.

Animal Protection Society of Durham provides resources to our community in a variety of ways. Our pet pantry is distributed through a partnership with Salvation Army each month to ensure we are helping those who need assistance with food. We know that the biggest barriers to pet ownership can be the expenses for veterinary care, and we have committed to providing 1,000 animals with low-cost alteration surgeries. We partner with a local small mobile clinic to secure appointments each month, and we have kept the costs as low as we can. We also provide a behavior helpline to our recent adopters to assist them with any adjustments to their family's life following the adoption. Our goals are to keep pets in homes and find ways that owners can get the resources they need to keep their pets with them.

Here are some ways our organization, Ruff Start Rescue, helps the local community support them and their pets:

    • We provide free resources to local community members as we have them available. We have an open-door policy, allowing community members to come in as needed to get food and other supplies for their pets.
    • We host community giveback days twice a year to allow anyone to come and get supplies. While food and litter are the most common items, we also have collars, leashes, carriers, rodent cages, toys, clothes, etc. to keep animals supported.
    • We donate to 10+ homeless shelters, crisis shelters, and food pantries when we have an excess of resources or supplies that we will not use.
    • We host wellness clinics at our rescue for discounted veterinary services for anyone to come and get vaccines, etc. for their pets. In 2024 we helped 90+ local pets through a wellness clinic in August.
    • We are working on licensing to offer low cost spay and neuters for the community at our rescue. This should be available to the community in 2025.
    • We offer Trap, Neuter, Release at our rescue as funding allows - we TNR'd 34 cats in 2024.
    • In 2024 we supplied over 16,000 pounds to the local community through these different programs!

This is such a great service your rescue does for the community. How did you financially become able to do all this, may I ask? We struggle just to feed the strays and help the hurt dogs and cats in St. Lucia. We want to be able to do so much more. Reading your post, I know it can be done. Any reply is so welcomed!

    • We have a development team that reached out to local organizations and bigger corporations to ask for supplies to be donated. Many of these supplies are expired or close to expired so they cannot sell them.  In many of these situations it is just an email connection that turns into a relationship, it can't hurt to ask! Local pet stores will have bins for people to put donations in as well! We do get a lot of smaller donations of supplies as well from the local community of open food bags, etc. that are available for our fosters but also for local community members.
    • We have over 100 events throughout our state as well and require some kind of financial or in-kind support to do the events at these venues. A great example is breweries - we will table there and bring a few animals, and they will donate a percentage of each beer sold to us for the time of the event!
    • We also have a team of amazing volunteers who help run these programs, get the word out, pick up donations and get them to the office, etc. We have been around since 2010 so we have been able to establish roots in the community. We are located in central Minnesota but have volunteers from all over the state! We have many events in more populated metro areas to draw in attention and donations, and also have remote volunteering opportunities so that people can get involved no matter where they live in the state.
    • We do have our own vetting suite on site which reduces costs of vetting and makes many of the vetting programs possible!
    • As the education manager - I also work with schools to organize supply drivers in classrooms too!
    • Social media is an amazing tool as well. We were extremely low on Kitten and Puppy food and did a plea on FB & Instagram with a link to our Amazon and Chewy wishlist... We got over 300+ boxes sent to the office through that! People love to see the impact they have, even if it is just a few bucks towards a small bag of food, so sharing how their donations are helping goes a long way.

I hope this information helps!! It has taken us years to get to this point, so with time and commitment you guys will get there too!

    Hi, y'all!

With our organization, community is everything.

We have a heavy focus on communication via social media on both our non-profit's Instagram page, but also through our larger platform, Pup Active Brand Co. - an apparel brand that we launched almost a decade ago that morphed into a community in the most organic way.

We've found that dog guardians who are struggling, whether it be for resources or affordable vet care, aren't sure who to go to for help. We've done our best to keep our voice loud & clear like a beacon - they may not all find help with a pet food pantry or vet services, but we find that most do which helps keep their dogs home instead of a local shelter.

We also stay super active in the community by partnering with local businesses for events and fundraisers. This brings a sense of belonging to people who may feel isolated (especially after disaster strikes like our back to back hurricanes just 4 months ago - our community is still rebuilding).

We continue to find that people really do want to help; they're just not sure how to start! By keeping the communication & advocacy for shelter dogs flowing, they find their way to volunteering, donating & sometimes fostering!

Hope this helps and would love to connect with further ideas!

We are an exotic, wild and farm animal sanctuary in a very rural area of south Florida.  You would be surprised how many people impulse buy exotic or farm animals and then realize they didn't research enough and decide to surrender them to a rescue. Since becoming a 501c3 in 2017 we have strongly believe that education is an important part of helping families keep their pets or at least make an informed decision before adopting. I write a bi-monthly article for a local pet magazine sharing information on caring for different species.  We have also offered temporary fostering of pets, such as pigs, guinea pigs, and birds. In July of 2023 we started a pet food bank to help people in our community keep their pets at home, distributing pet food and supplies to those in need. We currently have 84 families and three small nonprofits registered for our monthly pet food bank.

One of our most impactful programs is our Dot's Drive Thru pet food pantry. Once a month, locals come to our shelter to get a month's worth of supplemental food for their pets. We set up our parking lot like a drive-thru, get their (halfsheet) paper with what they need at the entrance, put the food directly in their cars, and they head out! We give away over 1000lbs of food every month during this event.

When we get other bulk donations, we'll also give folks the option of getting other supplies such as blankets, pet beds, dog toys, etc. This month we have about 20 pet carriers we are giving away at the event.

The event is named after a wonderful supporter who bequest us the initial funds for a pet food assistance program!

One thing that San Diego Last Chance Ranch is doing to help the pets and the people in the community is; We are getting on the local social media like Facebook groups and Nextdoor and we are helping people find their lost pets through matching lost and found animal ads. We are also finding homes for the animals listed as up for adoption with out having to bring them into the shelter, we do it by advertising them in many other locations and then matching them once we find an adopter. When people put an ad out for needing help getting food, animal food, or shelters, we respond with local resources like food banks, pet pantries, and available spaces to rent. We realize that even if there is information online for these resources not everyone knows how to find that information so if we seek them out, we can help the people and animals who have no where else to turn. We are still trying to fund raise to open the vet clinic and adoption center so that we can offer free spay and neuter to people who couldn't afford it otherwise. We also feed neighborhood cats.

I think my favorite programs are those that help keep people and pets together!

I feel like the most exciting thing upcoming for us here at Lynchburg Humane Society in Lynchburg, VA is our current capital campaign to open a low cost full service vet clinic for our community. We have been operating a low cost spay/neuter clinic for several years now but often have owners come into our facility looking help with vet bills and are excited to take it one step further. In the meantime, we have been able to offer many owners a temporary medical surrender option where they have surrendered their pet for the purpose of vet treatment - sometimes that is just simple medication and others are higher risk surgeries. The pet goes back to the owner afterwards and we use VetBilling to set the owner on a payment plan that best suits their financial ability to pay back the cost of treatment/surgery.

We also offer many of the other things listed here as well:

    • Community pet food pantry
    • Free behavior consultations with our certified behavior manager on staff
    • GoodPup discount links for easy, at home training
    • Safety Net Surrender for owners experiencing hardships - though this program is still an itty bitty baby and hasn't quite taken off just yet.
    • We will give owners pretty much any supplies they need to help keep their pet - crate, puppy pads, leashes, collars, etc
    • We recently started waiving microchip fees for owners who get their pet chipped at the time of reclaim and are seeing many owners take advantage of that opportunity

We are a fairly new Oakland, CA based nonprofit with a mission to keep pets with their humans and out of shelters. We connect with unhoused people through weekly outreach and with housed people through events in various locations throughout the city.

A key to our quick success has been partnering with already trusted organizations who help facilitate connecting us with their community members.  Our goal is to partner with people in their pets so that their humans feel supported. By providing ongoing care to keep their pets happy and healthy, their humans can focus on their own needs.

Through our mobile outreach and events we provide all of the following for free:
    Vaccines
    Microchipping and registration
    Flea meds and deworming
    Grooming
    Personalized ID tags
    Pet food and drinkable water
    Collars, leashes, and other supplies
Vet care at events with vet/vet tech volunteers from a local hospital
Vet care (limited) as needed in the field
Free spay/neuter through our partnership with Oakland Animal Services

We run on a shoe-string budget but have been very successful in finding creative ways to get donations. For example, we partnered with a trash diversion company called Ridwell, who collected 10 pallets of quality pet supplies for us! We recently partnered with Trader Joe's to receive bottled water for our unhoused pets and their people. We have mostly been relying on individual donations from community members.

There is a significant need here in Oakland and our popularity is growing very quickly.

Here at the SPCA Serving Erie County (Buffalo, NY area), we started a reasonable-cost veterinary clinic attached to our shelter to help keep pets in homes when that is a contributing reason they are surrendered.  We have also created an Outreach department where we hold low-cost vaccine and microchip clinics, help people find veterinary care that they can afford, run a pet food and supply pantry, and provide food and supplies to other local food pantries to help people in need keep their pets.  At our admissions desk, we have rebranded it as Community Support Services, to reflect that we aren't just taking every animal in; if we can help someone keep their pet when they really don't want to surrender it to us, we are focusing on doing that more, now.

Right now, my Rescue offers access to low-cost spay and neuter appointments, and temporary shelter for people who have lost their home and/ or are dealing with financial crisis. I also leave my phone open to discuss behavioral issues and help give people Options to try as far as behavioral issues go before they go the route of surrendering their animal.
My Rescue is also in the process of opening a cat sanctuary to the public that is going to have weekend "free vaccine" clinics To help people in low income houses be able to keep their animals healthy.

Our program provide basic veterinary care to pets of the unhoused and those who are very low income in San Mateo County, CA.

We also offer basic training for dogs, help with occasional outside veterinary care, and are in the process of adding a pet food bank for our clients.

We are also developing a foster program for pets of people who are going into residential treatment programs for mental health or substance abuse so they don't have to give up their pets or choose not to get help.

We work with social service workers who also provide care for the people, in the One Health model

We are currently exploring additional ideas to serve our community and we are currently a partner of PAWSitive Recovery.  PAWSitive Recovery is an SPCA International program that assists pet owners to secure temporary housing/care for their pets while they are in recovery for addiction, trauma or abuse.

Like so many areas of the country, we have also seen a high increase in owner surrendered animals.  If we have the space, the community member knows their beloved pet is well taken care of until they find their furr-ever home!

We at the East Rochester Meowscue try to keep families with their pets by offering to transport to vet appointments or help families get access to the care their pet needs. We are currently working on a plan for a long term "kitty hotel" for those families in transitions who are unable to house their pets for a month or two while they find housing or figure out their financial needs.

    Happy February!

We haven't started it yet, but one idea we have is to set up a pet pantry at our Kitty Cafe for people to get, for free, food and supplies for their pets if they need help. Providing food and supplies can help people keep their pets instead of leaving them at a shelter or "dumping" them.

We are a young organization but our cat rescue is one that is one that is community-centric and support the pets and their people.

The main program we launched in 2024 is TNVR in rural, poor and underserved areas in the southeast of Puerto Rico. A rural and mountainous area where there is lack of pet supplies stores, veterinary care does not exist in the town and there is a culture of free roaming pets. We engage the residents to learn more about pet guardianship, benefits of spay&neuter and teach about creating a safer pet  enriched environment. We actively recruit cat colonies care-takers to help us with our mission to reduce comunity cat overpopulation.

The first program includes spay&neuter and core vaccines with rabies free of cost for elderly cat guardians. We are doing  this montly  15 cats. ALP cat Often we find that they lack the means to provide more than just food.  They are also often comunity cat-caretakers. And only can afford to provide food for strays. We help them to control the cat colony size and they help monitor the cat's health and cat colony size. New additions get identified and provide the same service to keep the cat colonies healthy and monitored.  We remove young cats adoptable and find adopters for litters. Therefore the community continues to provide the same care to a smaller number of cats and they continue to care for both their pets and the community cats.

We also share tips and resources with pet owners that help increase pet-retention and responsible guardianship. Sometimes the perceived barrier to neuter is lack of knowledge or costs or means to drive to the spay clinic. We work in each community with their members to reduce the barriers.

At Purrfect Pals, we start with that first phone call. Our conversations are centered around how can we help you and your cat be successful especially if the reason is behavior or potentially medical.  We don't give medical advice but we will encourage people to see their vet if it sounds like it could be medical.  We did have a pet food bank on site but the need was too great for us to continue running it ourselves so now we funnel that food to the local food banks and refer people there.   We also have spay/neuter vouchers so those that are experiencing economic hardship can still get their cats altered.  In the future, we want to be able to host vaccine clinics and have spay/neuter clinics at our location along with continuing to do the vouchers for those who don't live in the area.

At our newly forming dog rescue in Socorro, Texas, we recognize that keeping pets with their families is just as important as rescuing those in need. Our mission is not only to provide a safe haven for abandoned or stray dogs but also to support pet owners facing hardships so they don't have to make the heartbreaking choice to surrender their pets.

    We are actively working to:
🐾 Provide pet food assistance to struggling families.
🐾 Offer resources for low-cost spay/neuter and vaccinations to keep pets healthy and reduce overpopulation.
🐾 Develop a temporary fostering network for individuals experiencing crises, such as domestic violence, homelessness, or hospitalization.
🐾 Collaborate with local organizations and social services to address the root causes of pet surrender, from financial struggles to housing insecurity.

Despite some opposition, we are committed to building a community-focused rescue that not only helps pets in need but also strengthens the human-animal bond in our area. We would love to connect with others doing similar work-what strategies have you found effective in keeping pets and families together?

The most recent one that I have created is to share with people wanting to surrender a cat due to allergies. The info graphic explains about what allergies are, How certain foods are dander removers can help reduce allergen in hopes people will keep their pets.

We've had a low cost Spay & Neuter Clinic for about a year now, and we've sterilized almost 300 cats since we started the program.

We also offer low cost microchipping, and recently got a tag engraver that we offer at a low cost as well. In order to support lost pet reunions.

in June 2024 we revamped our adoption process to lower barriers, which has lead to increased adoptions.

and starting in 2 weeks we are opening our Pet Food Pantry to help support families in need. Our goal is to help keep families together when they are faced with the hard choice of feeding themselves or feeding their pets.

We have expanded our Pet Pantry to hold more food in order to provide food to lower income families in our community. Some local companies in town have partnered with us to provide this food and there are community members in town that will also donate food for us to hand out. We also have a low income spay/neuter program that we typically do surgeries once a month but have tried to squeeze in extra surgery days to help combat the over pet population. By making these affordable, we hope that the number of "accidental" litters decrease so we see less puppies and kittens coming into the shelter.

Here at Almost Home Animal Rescue we support our pets in our community by having a pet pantry. Once a month a local grocery store distrubution center donates dog and cat food to our rescue. We save what we need for the month them have a pet pantry for people in the community that need a little extra support. We have a seperate storage building that we keep the food in. In the begining we would use our social media to notify the public and it was a help yourself situation. We found a couple complications with this process. Now we have it locked and ask people to come into the shelter and a staff member assists them.

Another way we are helping our community is we are working on getting funding for vaccination and microchip clinic. We are a rural communtity  and the closest veterinary clinic is 45 miles away. We are also in the process of a spay/neuter clinic.

Many of our board members also volunteer at the local food bank. We try to work together to help both pets and people.

Over the past year, we have redefined our values to guide our work and ensure that we are making a lasting impact on both animals and our community. These values are not just statements-they are the foundation of everything we do, shaping our programs, policies, and interactions with every animal and person we serve.

    Compassionate Care

We approach every animal, adopter, and community member with empathy and kindness.

    • How we live this: We provide lifesaving medical care, compassionate adoption counseling, and a Pet Pantry program to help families keep their pets during difficult times.

    Respect for Dignity

We believe in the inherent dignity of every living being and honor the unique bond between humans and animals.

    • How we live this: Our adoption process focuses on creating the right match, ensuring that both pets and people find meaningful, lifelong connections.

    Making a Difference

Our work is driven by a commitment to make a significant, positive impact in the world. Every action we take is with the goal of making a meaningful difference in the lives of the animals and community we serve.

    • How we live this: We are expanding spay and neuter services to reduce overpopulation and provide resources to keep pets in loving homes.

    Belief in Individual Worth

We treat every animal and person as an individual, recognizing their unique needs and value.

    • How we live this: Whether it's tailored adoption support, special care for medical-needs animals, or outreach programs, we ensure every being receives the attention they deserve.

    Unity and Teamwork

Collaboration and teamwork are essential to our success. By working together-staff, volunteers, adopters, and supporters-we can create a stronger community for animals.

    • How we live this: We are launching a Community Outreach Coordinator role to foster partnerships, recruit volunteers, and engage the community in our mission.

Education as a Key to Change

Education is essential to ending animal suffering. By providing education on responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, and humane treatment, we empower our community to make a difference.

    • How we live this: We host educational programs, community events, and outreach efforts to inform and inspire a more compassionate future for animals.

    Hi everyone,

One of the big things we have been doing is connecting individuals with the resources we as "professionals" have access to and knowledge of. I am located in NYC and there are VERY few low cost spay neuter slots available in general for members of the public. The ASPCA offers special appointments just for TNR certified volunteers. So, each month when we have extra spots outside of the cats in our own organization and our TNR volunteers, we give these extra spots to pet owners who have reached out with the desire to get their pets fixed but cannot afford to do so at $1,000 a pop. We know that it is VITAL to help pet owners with affordable vet care as well and believe this is an important service we help to provide!

    Hi everyone,

I am lucky enough to work at a shelter (Kentucky Humane Society) that has made intake diversion/pet retention a priority for the last ten years! I am the Pet Resource Manager and along with my three Pet Resource Counselors we provide counseling, resources and financial aid to those struggling to keep their pets. We do this through a number of programs:

    1. Behavior advice.
    2. Financial aid for:
      • Emergency Vet Care
      • Spay/Neuter
      • Vaccinations
      • Pet Deposits
      • Private Training
      • Short term (2 weeks or less) boarding
    3. Veticaid - This is a program we developed a few years ago for pet requiring surgery over $1000. Prior to this program there were some surgeries (like pyometra and amputation) that even with the full amount of financial aid we can approve, was not enough to have the surgery done at an outside vet. At our organization We are lucky enough to have an internal, full-time and amazing shelter vet service team who were willing to take on these surgeries so we can provide them for only $50-$250 or free depending on the client's income situation.
    4. Temporary housing (placing pets in our foster homes) for the pets of Domestic Violence survivors for up to 90 days as well as those receiving medical treatment that will keep them out of the home for up to 30 days.
    5. Resources lists and referrals to other organizations for services or needs outside of what we provide.

Hello! Paws and Whiskers Cat Shelter in Toledo Ohio!

Our shelter has a strict surrender and adoption form, plus fees that go along with it. We think that deters certain surrenders to our shelter, along with adoptions, we want to ensure our adopters are serious in their choices. As for our shelter cats, every cat that gets adopted receives all their vaccinations, is mirochipped and spay/neutered. We do have a PAWS back guarantee that allows any cats adopted from us, we will take back no questions asked, we don't want our cats to be homeless ever again. We are happy to report that does not happen too often. We try our best to keep our community engaged with the shelter, we have multiple different events and volunteer opportunities. We are just now finalizing and launching our new spay and neuter program for us to s/n our own shelter cats for a reduced price than we did outsourcing. We have multiple veterinarians to help our cause. Once things are going well, we plan to do s/n events for our community, and low income households. Providing such a service will help reduce the ever-growing stray cat population and help low-income families spay and neuter their cats as well. We think this will help our community reduce the amount of surrenders in our area. But at the end of the day it is about community and doing our part for the feline community as well.

Central Vermont Humane Society donates pet food and other much needed animal supplies to our local food pantry once a week. Since our shelter is located in a rather rural area and not easily accessible by walking , we went straight to the source were so many Vermonters already turn to during a time of need. In addition to supplies, CVHS offers one-on-one conversations about behavioral support and problem solving with certain situations in the home. We have a dedicated landing page on our website that educates the community about low-cost veterinary care, spay and neuter programs, and will hold a microchipping special for pets once a year.

We are always striving to do more but staffing in our shelter is still quite limited. Looking forward to seeing other shelter's reponses!

    Hey there!

In February, I'm trying to connect more shelters and facilitate more transfers. There are a lot of rural shelters in Northern AZ, so I'm reaching out and establishing relationships with as many shelters as I can. Forever Loved is a senior dog only shelter, so by establishing these relationships, we hope to provide rural shelters with access to a specialized rescue so we can build a stronger network and save even more senior pups!

We are APET Animal Shelter in Mineola, Texas.  We are a small, rural, private shelter, that is the only option for the residents of the Wood County. We administer the grant money the county sets aside for spay/neuters call the SNAP program.  Our volunteers handle the calls, find the participating vets and make the appointments and the county pays the bill for any Wood County dog or cat to be altered and they also pay for the rabies vaccine.  We also work with our local food bank to get bags of dry cat and dry dog into the hands of  families that come in for a monthly food box, that also need help with pets.  We believe in keeping families together instead of seeing animals come into the shelter.  We also tag from several kill shelters nearby to help save as many lives as we can.

At G&CS Advocacy and Rescue Corporation, we firmly believe that the well-being of pets and people are intertwined. Our approach focuses on extending care and resources beyond the shelter to keep pets and families together, especially those facing housing insecurity, financial hardship, or crisis. By supporting pet owners, we reduce the number of animals that end up in shelters and strengthen our communities. Here's how we are working to support both pets and their people:

    1. Pet Food Pantry:

We operate a pet food pantry that provides free or low-cost pet food and supplies to families in need. This initiative ensures that pet owners facing financial hardship can continue to care for their pets without having to surrender them due to a lack of resources. Our pantry serves hundreds of families each month, helping them keep their beloved pets at home.

    2. Behavioral Support:

We offer behavior support and training programs for pet owners struggling with their pets' behavior issues. Our team of experienced trainers provides one-on-one consultations, group classes, and online resources to help pet owners address common behavior problems. By offering these services, we prevent pets from being surrendered due to manageable behavior issues.

    3. Access to Veterinary Care:

We partner with local veterinary clinics to provide affordable or free veterinary care for pets in need. Our regular spay/neuter clinics, vaccination drives, and wellness check-ups ensure that pets receive the medical attention they need to stay healthy. We also offer financial assistance for emergency veterinary care to pet owners facing economic challenges.

    4. Temporary Fostering for People in Crisis:

Our temporary fostering program supports individuals facing crises such as domestic violence, hospitalization, or homelessness. We provide temporary foster homes for their pets until they can be reunited. This program ensures that pets are cared for during difficult times and that families can be reunited once the crisis has passed.

    5. Partnerships with Social Service Agencies:

We collaborate with social service agencies to provide holistic support to pet owners in need. By working together, we address both the human and animal aspects of a crisis, ensuring that families receive comprehensive assistance. Our partnerships include housing assistance programs, food banks, and mental health services.

    Success Story:

One of our success stories involves a family facing eviction due to financial hardship. With our support, they received temporary foster care for their pets, access to our pet food pantry, and assistance in finding new housing. After a few months, the family was able to secure stable housing and reunite with their pets, thanks to the combined efforts of our programs and partner organizations.

    Lessons Learned:

    • Community Collaboration: Building strong partnerships with local organizations amplifies our impact and ensures that pet owners receive well-rounded support.

    • Flexibility: Adapting our programs to meet the evolving needs of the community is essential for providing effective assistance.

    • Education: Educating pet owners about available resources and responsible pet ownership empowers them to keep their pets healthy and happy.

At Kalamazoo Animal Rescue we provide our community with a low-cost wellness clinic option for their pets once monthly. We host drive-up microchip clinics and low-cost spay and neuter clinics. Last year we spayed and neutered 1,188 pets within our community. We work with local TNR groups. We provide winter shelters for people in the community caring for stray/feral cats. We offer food assistance upon request, donate to the local pet food bank and partner with organizations for the unhoused community to provide vet assistance and pet food on an as needed basis.

    Hello!

We thankfully have several options for helping people and their pets at Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter in Billings, MT.

PALS Program- A low to no cost program for seniors to get them supplies, medical care and transport for their pets

Safety Net Foster Program- 30 to 90 days of foster for owned animals especially fleeing domestic violence or needed to house their pet while they are in the hospital or treatment. We cover all medical care their pets may need including spay and neuter.

Pet Pantry- free supplies for anyone who may need them. Our volunteers help keep this stocked or people can ask if they need certain supplies at the front desk.

Low Cost Vaccine Clinics and Spay and Neuter Clinics- We offer monthly clinics to help get animals vaccinate and altered for less money to help population control.

Single Mama Special- Accidentally litters will be surrendered to the shelter and the moms and dads will be altered! The owners act as fosters until they are big enough to stay at the shelter. That way their pet gets altered and all of the babies are altered and cared for as well.

These programs are helping our goal to keep pets in their loving home. If money or supplies are a barrier, we try to navigate that instead of filling up kennels. Sometimes it works great and other times we see room for improvement.

Our rescue, Fine Feline Cat Rescue, is a small foster-based in Massachusetts. We cannot always take in a cat an owner would like to surrender if we don't have an available foster, be we always provide guidance. For example, if the surrender request is for a behavioral issue, we offer free counselling and education resources. We also direct owners to other groups we maintain relationships with, if we know their intakes are open. We let people know about options like Adopt-a-Pet's direct free rehoming platform so the cat doesn't have to endure removal from it's home to a rescue, and then to an adoptive home. In short, if we can't help directly by taking a cat in, we try to give the owner direction.

Pueblo Spay and Neuter Now: A Year of Impact & Pawsitive Collaborations!

Since launching in November 2023, Pueblo Spay and Neuter Now has been making a profound difference in our community. In less than a year, we've successfully spayed and neutered 940 cats and dogs, ensuring fewer unwanted litters and reducing the strain on local shelters. Alongside sterilization, we've also provided vaccinations to all these pets, protecting them from preventable diseases and improving their overall well-being.

Our mission has always been clear: preventing pet homelessness by increasing access to affordable spay/neuter services. Through partnerships with organizations like Bergen Spay and Neuter Alliance, San Luis Valley Spay and Neuter, and local rescues, we've brought relief clinics to pet owners and community cat caregivers who otherwise wouldn't have access to these vital services.

But this is just the beginning. We're committed to expanding our reach, hosting more clinics, and continuing our efforts to make spay/neuter accessible for all pet owners in Pueblo and beyond.

Want to support our work? Donations help us fund future clinics and reach even more pets in need. Visit pueblospayandneuternow.org to learn more!

The Humane Society of Blue Ridge has several programs that support pets and people in our community. These programs are constantly growing, and we are working on additional fundraising to support these expanding programs.

    1. Pet Food Pantry : We provide free dog and cat food to locals in financial crisis. We currently do this monthly but are looking to start doing it twice a month in partnership with our local Snack in a Backpack (that gives free food for children/families in need. That way a family can get human and pet food in one pick-up.
    2. Free Vaccinations: We provide free vaccination clinics for cats and dogs. We often provide food, tours, and educational material that day.
    3. Low-Cost Spay/Neuter: We have partnered our in-house clinic with other local rescue groups and local animal control so they can get more animals fixed at a lower cost than local vets.
    4. Education: We provide community education through our adoption process (helps new pet owners) and local school programs (we have a volunteer go into schools with a presentation and material suited for children).

    Hello all,

A Safe Place, a domestic violence and human trafficking organization in Lake County, Illinois, realized that the significant barrier of victims/survivors not being able to flee with their beloved pets caused another layer of trauma. We applied for several grants which allowed us to modify our emergency shelter to become pet friendly. We now have two pet friendly bedrooms, a small kennel with a wash station, and an outside pet area. We are currently obtaining quotes for the addition of a dog run. We began our pet shelter program "Safe Paws" in 2023. We provide case management services which include veterinarian care, food, supplies, grooming, education, referrals, resources, etc.  We originally offered services to our emergency shelter clients only however, we recognized the need for support in our transitional housing residents as well. Many of our TL residents needed a service dog (due to epilepsy or other conditions) or an emotional support animal (due to the trauma they endured). We assist with navigating through the processes of getting the necessary documentation along with supporting them in making informed decisions when choosing the right animal. We partner with many pet friendly hotels which allow us to serve more clients with pets. We also partner with a veterinarian, a groomer, two animal shelters, a pet store and Noah's Rest, a DV pet organization that will shelter pets while the victim/survivor is in our program (they provide shelter, food, vet care and will also send photos of the pet to the owner to show that they are safe and happy).  When we first re-opened the shelter after our renovations, the two pet bedrooms were occupied before the other non-pet bedrooms, showing the incredible need of more opportunities for victims/survivors and pets to remain together.

    About 4 Paws 4 A Cause

4 Paws 4 A Cause is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering adults with disabilities by training them to become certified service dog handlers-all at no cost. Over half of our service dogs are rescues, providing both the handlers and the dogs with a second chance at a more enriched life.

Most of our handlers receive disability benefits, and we support them in every step of their journey. Our comprehensive assistance includes:

    • Health & Licensing Support: Guidance to keep dogs' vaccinations and licenses up to date.
    • Local Resource Connections: Access to pet food pantries, food pantries, clothing drives, and affordable spay/neuter and veterinary care.
    • Housing Assistance: Information and resources to help service dog teams continue low-cost housing, even in communities with pet restrictions.

At 4 Paws 4 A Cause, we believe in creating a supportive community where both people and dogs thrive together.  74% of handlers report improvement of mental health and 94% report less pain and inflammation as a result of having a service dog.

Hi! We often try to donate large bags of dog food to our local pet food pantry as we get the donations for our shelter- we have been fortunate to have a consistent supply of food donations for a while now and we are trying to spread some of that generosity to our local community. We also work with a local group called the Animal Welfare League of Scioto County- they offer vouchers to locals in need of straw for their dogs and cats- our wardens keep those in their trucks so if they see the need- the help can be given. The  AWL also help provide the community with lower cost spay/neuters. We are steadily trying to make the shelter and our community better- one day at a time.
