    Hello,

I love this resource. I think visually the better and more beautiful  that  we represent the work we do to our supporters the re is a better chance we have to move that needle whether it is to get more adoptions, donations, foster parents and volunteers.  I have shared the resource with marketing, website staff and bookmarked it on my computer. Thank you to the team that created this library. HeArt Speak - hats off  to you.

One skill I've never mastered in 12 years in animal shelter marketing is effective offsite adoption events for adult dogs. Effective (to me) meaning 50% or more of the dogs you take get adopted, and the return rate mirrors your average return rate.

This is what people always suggest when we're over capacity but I've found them to be highly resource intensive and not effective. But I know some shelters do have success with them, so I want your playbook! I want to know how exactly you do it. I don't know if this is a perfect Resource Library topic because I don't know if people will have like strategy documents… maybe it's just a post on the forum I need to do.

    Posted 04-28-2023 11:11 AM

At our rescue we don't actually literally adopt out at events, we call them Meet and Greets. The potential adopter still has to put in an application that is reviewed, we review DNA lists and then do a virtual home visit. We consider the events three-fold: introducing the idea of adopting/not shopping for dogs, raising awareness of  spay/neuter importance and increasing our rescue's brand awareness. They are time intensive! So we have learned to be picky about where we do events. Lots of local businesses want  us to "bring cute dogs" to increase their own foot traffic. We look at how much exposure the dogs will get, how the physical layout is (or isn't) good for rescue dogs on leash to interact with people and have downtime, and where it's located in relation to our kennel facilities. We do some events that are far from the kennel facilities, counting on fosters to bring their dogs, but as soon as we get 7 lined up, 3 find homes, 1 person gets sick, and we don't have enough dogs. Whereas if the event is close to the kennels, we can substitute.  So using events as a solution to immediate over-crowding problems maybe isn't the right fit for you, but events can help the organization's overall marketing.

Any work including promotional materials organizations have done and used to advocate for breed inclusivity in rental properties/complexes/apartments. Any work being done to reduce the costs of pet deposit fees or programs that support pet owners with pet deposits! Links to any organizations websites that are working to promote complexes that do not have breed restrictions! All the things that help our larger dog breed owners keep their pets <3

I'd love to know how different organizations  manage TNR data -- the software they use for storing colony details and status updates, caretaker info, individual cats (if they track at that level), volunteer contacts, and what they see as the pros and cons of their systems.

I would love to dive into this conversation! It's incredibly how quickly TNR tracking can get overwhelming. I especially struggle with organization for our big TNR events where we are spaying/neutering 20-40 cats from 5+ locations in a day. We are still pretty new to big TNR events, and I would love to see how others organize/track volunteers, locations, and the cats themselves in those situations.

Some animal shelter professionals have traveled an unconventional career path or move up through the ranks on the merits of their dedication, focus, and natural talent but without a lot of traditional business experience for acquiring skills such as strategic planning, budgeting, public speaking, etc. I'd love to see roadmaps of how other shelters develop their leadership from within.

Something that is becoming an increasing need, especially in areas that are experiencing more severe weather now than ever before, is Disaster Preparedness and Response. A collection of resources that provide a wide variety of organizational planning and recommendations may be helpful to face emergencies as they arise!

    Eliza,
I agree. Last year I volunteered as a first responder for the Caldor Fire in Northern California. The shelter I was at took in 300 animals including pets and farm animals that were left behind from the fire. From what I heard, people got caught by surprise and were unable to get their animals into a vehicle to get away.  I felt that if people have an emergency plan on how to keep their animals safe, we would not have that many. Many of the animals were reclaimed after people found a place to live but several were left behind as well.

This has to do with Donations but also with veterinarian Care.  Donations are down; volunteers are down.  In certain areas, rescues and low income pet owner cannot access low-cost Spay and neuter or low-cost vaccine.  Solutions to bridge that gap.

    Hello,

These resources are plentiful. I appreciate the organized libray; I can point staff to this feed and more easily search for content pertinent to them and the shelter. I do have a request that not many may have, but we at WAGS Pet Adoption get a lot of exotic pets. We often have many rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, birds, and reptiles. Can there be more information on finding homes for exotic pets? With the current veterinary shortages, extremely high cost of care of an exotic if you need veterinary care, and limited veterinarians skilled to do exotic care, it truly leaves the animals sitting in the shelters for extended stays. If we had more discussions about these types of pets, we could increase the desirability for adoption and the shelter communities' interest and efforts to speak about these species as much as we do about dogs and cats. Topics- husbandry care, housing, veterinary care, and marketing for adoption. Additionally, there are not many grants specific to these species' care, spay/neutering, and adoption efforts. I search often and reach out to exotic animal food suppliers and niche groups for help.
Thank you in advance for more information.

@Michelle Russillo I couldn't agree more there isn't much info out there  or grants for exotic animals. We run a farm and exotic animal sanctuary in Florida. We are fortunate enough to have a wonderful exotic vet but yes very expensive.  We have a difficult time finding grants specifically for farm and exotic animals. I would love to see more resources on the topics you mentioned. Not sure if you are aware but Oxbow has a rescue program to support nonprofits. They have some great animal care flyers for rabbits, guinea pigs and other pocket pets, you can hand out to new adopters and people who are considering adopting. They also offer grants and discount on their products too.  https://oxbowanimalhealth.com/for-rescues/    https://oxbowanimalhealth.com/

Thanks for the suggestion, Michelle. Since we are focused solely on dogs and cats at Maddie's Fund, we aren't planning on holding a resource drive specifically for exotic pets. With that being said, I know there are probably many forum members who may also take in exotic pets and are looking for that type of information. I recommend creating a new discussion post like your post above. You've got some great specific topics that you're looking for and there may be other forum members who can help.

I would love to see more resources for networking with tranporters across the country. We still have huge areas - especially  in the West/Southwest - where transport volunteer numbers are very low. I'm sure the transport groups are out there - volunteer drivers, pilots, truck drivers, etc. - we just need an easier, more centralized way to find them.

Hi Gigi.  I agree! Our volunteer organization does 'just' transport - no animal intake. Central Arkansas Rescue Transport (CART) acts as organizer and liaison - finding and developing transport relationships with destination partners; we have a rescue group Coalition in the state to pull animals for these trips.

I would love more resources that address the challenges of recruiting volunteers for rescue transport activities.  The lack of volunteers – not just for driving transport – is hampering our growth.  My dilemma: focus on the back-office support tasks vs. acting upon transport prospects.

Along the lines of transport volunteers, I would love to get more information on protocols, insurance, etc. We all know things can happen during transport, are there insurance companies out there that provide some kind of liability insurance for the transport volunteers? What if an animal bites the volunteer, or escapes, or has diarrhea/puke that shoots out the crate and all over their vehicle, or any of the other myriad of issues that can happen when animals are involved? I think it's asking a lot to just have the transport volunteers "waive" all liability. So, right now, we are not able to transport "to" others if we have to drive them ourselves.

Renee, I would like more resources in these areas also - protocol and liability insurance.  As to insurance, I believe how your organization operates will impact your need for insurance (and the ability to get it). I consulted an attorney about the risk in our organization; I expect to revisit the situation over time as our situation changes.  Our volunteer drivers all sign an agreement that waives liability and they must have current automobile insurance when they drive their own vehicle.  When we use the van of a Coalition member or check-out a van from our local Best Friends Hub (Network Partners can sign out their vans - a great benefit to small volunteer transport groups!), the drivers must be authorized by the organization that provides the van (to be covered by the fleet insurance).

Does your organization send or receive animals on transport (or both)?
